[Overview] This herb is also known as Pomegranate Husk, Sour Pomegranate Peel, and Sour Husk. It is the pericarp of the pomegranate plant Punica granatum L. of the Punicaceae family. It is harvested in autumn when the fruit is ripe and the apex cracks open. The seeds and septa are removed, then the peel is cut into sections and sun-dried or dried with low heat.

[Properties] Bitter, sour, astringent in taste; warm in nature; slightly toxic. Enters the Kidney and Large Intestine meridians.

[Actions] Astringes the intestines to stop diarrhea, stops bleeding, and kills parasites.

[Applications]
1. Used for chronic diarrhea and chronic dysentery. It can be decocted alone or taken as a powder, or combined with Myristica (nutmeg), Terminalia chebula (Hezi), and Halloysitum Rubrum (Chishizhi). If diarrhea or dysentery is due to deficiency cold, it should be combined with dried ginger and Aconitum (Fuzi). For chronic diarrhea causing prolapse due to sinking middle qi, it can be combined with Ginseng, Astragalus, and Cimicifuga (Shengma). This herb is effective not only for deficiency cold chronic dysentery but also for damp-heat diarrhea when combined with heat-clearing and damp-drying herbs such as Coptis (Huanglian) and Pulsatilla (Baitouweng).
2. Used for intestinal wind with bloody stools, excessive menstrual bleeding, and leukorrhea. For intestinal wind with bloody stools due to heat, combine with Biota leaves (Cebaiye), Sanguisorba (Diyu), and Sophora flower (Huaihua); for deficiency cold, combine with processed ginger. For excessive menstrual bleeding or persistent metrorrhagia, combine with Angelica (Danggui), Donkey-hide gelatin (Ejiao), and Mugwort leaf (Aiye), as in the formula Shiliupi San (Pomegranate Peel Powder). For leukorrhea that is clear, astringent, and thin due to cold, combine with dried ginger, Atractylodes (Cangzhu), and Atractylodes macrocephala (Baizhu); for sticky leukorrhea due to damp-heat, combine with Toona root bark (Chungeng Baipi), Phellodendron (Huangbai), and Polygonum (Fengweicao).
3. Used for parasite accumulation abdominal pain. Treats abdominal pain caused by roundworms, pinworms, tapeworms, etc., often combined with Areca nut (Binglang) and Quisqualis (Shijunzi).
Additionally, externally it can treat carbuncles, ulcers that do not heal, scabies, tinea, and burns from fire or water.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, decocted water for fumigation and washing, powdered for sprinkling or applied as a paste.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Contains β-sitosterol, ursolic acid, betulinic acid, D-mannitol, free triterpenes, alkaloids, carbonic anhydrase, punicalagin B, gallic acid dilactone, gallic acid, punicalagin A, tannins A, as well as malic acid, ursolic acid glycosides, punicalin, punicalagin, tannins, resins, and mannitol.
2. Pharmacological effects: Exhibits anthelmintic activity; pomegranate peel alkaloid is the main active anthelmintic component, paralyzing tapeworms, most effective against pig tapeworms but ineffective against dwarf tapeworms. The alkaloid first excites then inhibits the central nervous system and has specific toxicity to the optic nerve. Pomegranate peel inhibits Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella dysenteriae, Salmonella typhi, Salmonella paratyphi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Vibrio cholerae, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, with strongest effect on Shigella dysenteriae. It also inhibits various pathogenic fungi and influenza virus. Additionally, it has hypoglycemic and hypotensive effects.
3. Clinical reports:
1) Acute gastrointestinal bleeding: Pomegranate peel 300 g, alum 10 g. Dissolved in water and concentrated to 1000 ml, take supernatant. Oral dose 20 ml every hour for 3 doses. 2) Colitis: Pomegranate peel 30–45 g, penicillin 1.6–2.4 million units, streptomycin 1.0 g. Soak peel in 500 ml water for 30 minutes, then simmer to 100–150 ml, filter, cool to about 30°C, mix with diluted antibiotics. Retain enema once nightly for 10 days per course.
