[Overview] This herb is also known as Taiyi Yuliang, Shinao, Bai Yuliang, and Yuliangshi. It is a hydroxide mineral, limonite. It is mainly produced in Henan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Guangdong, and also found in Sichuan. It can be harvested year-round. After excavation, impurities such as stones and soil are removed.

[Properties] Taste: sweet and astringent; nature: slightly cold. Enters the Spleen and Large Intestine meridians.

[Actions] Astringes the intestines to stop diarrhea, restrains leakage to stop bleeding, and stabilizes vaginal discharge.

[Applications] 1. Used for chronic diarrhea and chronic dysentery, often combined with Red Halloysite (Chishizhi), as in the formula Chishizhi Yuliang Tang (赤石脂禹余粮汤). For prolonged diarrhea or dysentery with deficiency of upright qi, it is commonly combined with Codonopsis (Dangshen), Atractylodes (Baizhu), Psoralea (Buguzhi), etc. For spleen and kidney deficiency, it is combined with Aconite (Fuzi), Psoralea (Buguzhi), etc. For chronic diarrhea injuring yin, it is combined with Rehmannia (Shudi) and others.

2. Used for uterine bleeding (metrorrhagia), blood in stool, and bleeding hemorrhoids. For women with instability of Chong and Ren vessels causing continuous uterine bleeding, it is often combined with Cuttlefish Bone (Wuzeigu), Red Halloysite (Chishizhi), Dragon Bone (Longgu), Oyster Shell (Muli), etc. For blood in stool and hemorrhoidal bleeding, it is commonly combined with Sanguisorba (Diyu) and Sophora flower (Huaihua). If the pattern is qi deficiency unable to control bleeding, Codonopsis (Dangshen) and Atractylodes (Baizhu) are added; if both qi and yin are injured, Ginseng (Renshen), Muxiang (Wood Oil), and Wumei are added.

3. Used for spleen and kidney deficiency with instability of the lower origin causing vaginal discharge in women, often combined with Cuttlefish Bone (Wuzeigu) and calcined Oyster Shell (Duan Muli). For severe deficiency, Ginseng (Renshen), Rehmannia (Shudi), Chinese Yam (Shanyao), and Dodder Seed (Tusizi) are added.

Additionally, this herb has astringent and wound-constricting effects; powdered and applied externally, it can be used for skin ulcers.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoct 9–15 g, preferably decocted first to remove dregs, then the juice is combined with other herbs for further decoction; or used in pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, powdered and sprinkled or made into a paste for application. For astringing intestines to stop diarrhea and vaginal discharge, raw herb is preferred; for astringing to stop bleeding, vinegar-processed herb is mostly used.

[Modern Research] 1. Chemical components mainly include basic iron oxide and basic hydrated iron oxide, also containing large amounts of phosphates and elements such as aluminum, magnesium, potassium, and sodium.
2. Pharmacological effects: decoctions of raw, calcined, and vinegar-processed limonite all enhance gastrointestinal motility in mice; raw limonite shortens coagulation and bleeding times, whereas calcined limonite prolongs these times.
