[Overview] This herb is also known as Ciyuzi, Ciliuzi, Cilankezi, and Mountain Pomegranate. It is the mature fruit of Rosa laevigata Michx., a plant of the Rosaceae family. It is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hubei, Anhui, Jiangxi, Fujian, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, and other regions. The fruit is harvested in autumn when it turns red and ripe, then sun-dried, placed in a barrel and stirred to remove the prickles, and dried completely in the sun.
[Properties] Taste: sour, sweet, astringent; nature: neutral. Channels entered: Stomach, Bladder, Large Intestine.
[Actions] Astringes essence, restrains urination, astringes the intestines, stops vaginal discharge.
[Applications]
1. Used for spermatorrhea and seminal emission, frequent urination and enuresis, leukorrhea; often combined with Euryale Seed (Qianshi) in the formula Shui Lu Er Xian Dan (水陆二仙丹). If qi and yin are insufficient, ginseng and cooked rehmannia may be added; if liver and kidney deficiency, cooked rehmannia and goji berry may be added; if internal fire is active, Huangbai and Anemarrhena may be added; if frequent urination and enuresis, combined with mulberry cocoon and Chinese yam.
2. Used for middle jiao spleen deficiency with chronic diarrhea and dysentery; often combined with Codonopsis, Chinese yam, Poria, Atractylodes, Euryale Seed, and lotus seed. If diarrhea and dysentery are prolonged with incontinence, combined with poppy shell.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–15 g; or used in pills, powders, or as a syrup.
[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of excess fire or pathogenic heat.

1. Chemical constituents: The fruit contains citric acid, malic acid, tannins, resin, vitamin C, saponins, sugars, and starch.
2. Pharmacological actions: The tannins in Fructus Rosae Laevigatae have an astringent effect and can promote gastric juice secretion, aiding digestion; water extracts reduce urination frequency, prolong urination intervals, and increase urine volume per void in experimental frequent urination rat models; decoctions significantly reduce serum cholesterol and beta-lipoprotein levels in hyperlipidemic rabbits, lessen visceral fat deposition and aortic atherosclerosis; decoctions inhibit several influenza viruses including PR8.
3. Clinical reports: For elderly urinary incontinence, fresh Fructus Rosae Laevigatae root 30 g decocted and taken twice daily for 10 days per course. In 24 cases treated, 14 cases (58%) showed marked effect, 7 cases (29%) effective, 3 cases (13%) ineffective, with a total effective rate of 87%.
