[Overview] This herb is also known as Tu Bei, Jia Bei Mu, and Cao Bei. It is the tuber of Bolbostemma paniculatum (Maxim.) Franquet, a plant of the Cucurbitaceae family. It is distributed in Hebei, Shandong, Henan, Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces. Harvested in autumn, the tubers are cleaned, broken open, boiled until the white core disappears, then removed and sun-dried.

[Properties] Bitter in taste, cold in nature. Enters the Lung and Spleen channels.

[Actions] Clears heat and detoxifies, transforms phlegm and dissipates nodules.

[Applications]
1. Used for early-stage mastitis, often combined with Bai Zhi (Angelica dahurica), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthes root), and Ru Xiang (Frankincense) as a powder taken with wine.
2. Used for non-ulcerated scrofula; taken as a decoction internally and applied externally as a powder.
3. Used for snake and insect bites and traumatic bleeding; applied externally as a powder.
Currently commonly used to treat mastitis, cervical lymph node tuberculosis, chronic lymphadenitis, and hypertrophic rhinitis.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 4.5–9 g. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and applied or powdered and mixed for topical application.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents include tuber glycosides of Bolbostemma, maltitol, maltose, sucrose, and others.
2. Pharmacological effects: Bolbostemma glycosides exhibit anti-inflammatory effects on mouse ear edema; Bolbostemma glycoside I has strong anticancer activity.
3. Clinical reports on wart diseases: extracts of Rhizoma Bolbostemmatis saponins are prepared as a 2% injection and topical preparation. The injection contains 2 mg of saponins per ampoule, administered by slow intramuscular injection, 2 mg per dose, 1–2 times daily, for 20 days as one course. The topical preparation is a 0.25% saponin-containing sodium 2,3-dimercapto-1-propanesulfonate aqueous solution, applied by rubbing 2–4 times daily on the affected area. In a total of 252 cases treated for various skin warts, 219 cases were cured, 21 markedly effective, 8 improved, and 4 ineffective. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1984, (6):49]
