[Overview] This herb is also known as Caoyue Ming, Yangming, Huan Tongzi, and Yangjiao Dou. It is the mature seed of the Fabaceae family plants Cassia obtusifolia L. or Cassia tora L. The former is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Anhui, Sichuan, and other regions; the latter is mainly produced in Guangxi, Yunnan, and other regions. The mature fruits are harvested in the autumn seasons, sun-dried, threshed to obtain seeds, and impurities are removed.
[Properties] Bitter, sweet, and salty in taste; slightly cold in nature. Enters the Liver, Kidney, and Large Intestine meridians.
[Actions] Clears the Liver and brightens the eyes; moistens the intestines and promotes bowel movements.
[Applications] 1. Used for red, swollen, and painful eyes, cataracts, and blurred vision. For wind-heat obstructing the eyes with redness and pain, often combined with Chrysanthemum flower, Fangfeng, Qingxiangzi, Huanglian, etc., made into pills for oral administration, such as Juemingzi Wan (决明子丸). If wind-heat attacks the eyes causing sudden cataracts, it can be combined with Shengma, Shanzhi, Huangqin, Xiakucao, etc., made into powders for oral use, such as Juemingzi San (决明子散). For long-term cataracts, it can be combined with Ruiren, Lilu, and cuttlefish bone powder for decoction and eye drops, such as Jueming Jian (决明煎). For night blindness, it can be combined with Difuzi, such as Difuzi Wan (地肤子丸). For Liver and Kidney deficiency with vision decline, it can be combined with Yanggan, Liaozi, or Gouqizi, Jili, Tusizi, etc.
2. Used for dizziness and headache caused by Liver Yang rising, combined with Xiakucao, Gouteng, Baijili, etc. Currently commonly used for hypertension-related headache and dizziness.
3. Used for dry intestines constipation or habitual constipation, either roasted and brewed as tea or combined with Gualouren, Yuliren, etc., for decoction.
Additionally, externally applied to treat swelling, toxins, and tinea.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–15 g; or powdered; or brewed as tea. External use: appropriate amount, powdered and applied as a paste.
[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of Spleen and Stomach deficiency cold and Spleen deficiency with loose stools.
[Modern Research] 1. Chemical constituents: Seeds of Cassia obtusifolia and Cassia tora contain various anthraquinones: chrysophanol, emodin, aloe-emodin, rhein, physcion, chrysophanol methyl ether, chrysophanol glucoside, 8-hydroxy-3-methylanthraquinone-1-gentiobioside, crocin, and others. Also contains cassialactone, rubrofusarin, betaine, etc.
2. Pharmacological effects: Alcohol extracts, aqueous extracts, or constituents of Cassia seed inhibit and kill various bacteria and fungi; Cassia seed fluid extract has laxative effects; Cassia seed injection lowers blood pressure by significantly reducing both systolic and diastolic pressure; it significantly raises serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and improves the HDL-C/total cholesterol ratio, beneficial for preventing atherosclerosis; inhibits ADP-, arachidonic acid-, and collagen-induced platelet aggregation; suppresses cellular immunity but has no significant effect on humoral immunity and enhances macrophage phagocytosis; decoctions reduce liver damage caused by carbon tetrachloride and other toxins, with hepatoprotective active components mainly being cassiaside and others.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Infantile malnutrition: 20 g of Caoyue Ming, 10 g each of chicken gizzard lining and hawthorn, and fresh hen liver were decocted together. Among 145 cases treated, 127 were cured, 15 improved, and 3 ineffective. [Hubei Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1986,(6):53] (2) Male gynecomastia: 25–50 g of raw Caoyue Ming brewed as tea or crushed into powder, 25 g each time, twice daily with boiling water. Among 12 cases treated, 9 were cured within 15–25 days, and 3 cured within 35 days. [Zhejiang Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1993, 28(9):415]
