[Overview] This herb is also known as Huai Mutong, You Mutong, and Bai Mutong. It is the vine stem of Clematis armandii Franch. or Clematis montana Buch.-Ham., plants of the Ranunculaceae family. The former is mainly produced in Shaanxi, Gansu, Fujian, and Sichuan provinces; the latter is mainly produced in Sichuan, Tibet, Guizhou, Yunnan, and Taiwan. Harvested in autumn by cutting the stems, scraping off the outer bark, slicing, and drying.

[Properties] Taste is bland and bitter; nature is cold. Enters the Heart, Lung, Small Intestine, and Bladder meridians.

[Actions] Clears heat and promotes urination; unblocks the channels and promotes lactation.

[Applications]
1. Used for damp-heat in the bladder causing scanty, painful urination; often combined with Plantago seed (Che Qian Zi) and Talcum (Hua Shi).
If hematuria is present, add Small Thistle (Xiao Ji), Cattail Pollen (Pu Huang), and White Grass Root (Bai Mao Gen).
2. Used for heart fire rising causing oral ulcers and sores; commonly combined with Rehmannia glutinosa (Sheng Di Huang), Lophatherum gracile (Dan Zhu Ye), and Glycyrrhiza uralensis (Sheng Gan Cao).
3. Used for amenorrhea and insufficient lactation in women; can be combined with Vaccaria seed (Wang Bu Liu Xing) and Pangolin scale (Chuan Shan Jia).
4. Used for damp-heat bi syndrome with joint pain and obstruction; can be combined with Stephania tetrandra (Fang Ji) and Sinomenium acutum (Luo Shi Teng).
