[Overview] This product is also known as horse deer antler and sika deer antler. It is the ossified antler or the antler base shed in the spring following the sawing of velvet from the Cervus elaphus Linnaeus (horse deer) or Cervus nippon Temminck (sika deer) of the Cervidae family. Commonly called “horse deer antler,” “sika deer antler,” or “deer antler base.” Mainly produced in Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Sichuan, Qinghai, Inner Mongolia, and Xinjiang provinces. Generally, the antlers are cut off together with the skull bone in winter or early spring, or sawed off at the base, then cleaned and air-dried, called “cut antler”; or naturally shed antlers collected in late spring are called “shed antler.”
[Properties] Salty in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Kidney and Liver meridians.
[Actions] Tonifies the Kidney and warms Yang, nourishes essence and blood, activates blood circulation and reduces swelling.
[Applications]
1. Used for soreness and cold pain in the lumbar region due to Kidney deficiency and essence depletion, impotence, and spermatorrhea. For Kidney deficiency with cold pain in the lumbar spine, often used alone in powdered form taken with water, or combined with Achyranthes bidentata (Niuxi), as in the formula Lujiao Wan (Deer Antler Pill). For Kidney Yang deficiency with diminished Mingmen fire and impotence, it can be combined with Cuscuta (Tusizi), Cistanche (Roucongrong), Morinda (Bajitian), etc. For Kidney deficiency with essence depletion and nocturnal emission, often combined with turtle shell (Guiban), Lycium fruit (Gouqizi), and ginseng decoction, as in the formula Guilu Ershixian Gao.
2. Used for lower burner deficiency cold causing metrorrhagia, hematuria, leukorrhea, and enuresis. For women with Yang deficiency and scanty blood causing unstable Chong and Ren vessels and persistent metrorrhagia, often combined with Angelica (Danggui), donkey-hide gelatin (Ejiao), prepared Rehmannia (Shudi), and cuttlefish bone (Wujiaogu). For deficiency cold causing hematuria, often combined with raw Rehmannia (Sheng Dihuang) and charred blood residue (Xueyutan). For lower source deficiency cold with continuous leukorrhea or frequent enuresis, it can be taken in powdered form or cooked in porridge.
3. Used for yin sores with discharge, non-healing ulcers, and traumatic bruises and swelling. For yin sores, often combined with cinnamon (Rougui) and white mustard seed (Baijiezi). For chronic non-healing ulcers on the lower limbs, powdered and combined with charred blood residue and frankincense (Ruxiang) for external use. For traumatic bruises and swelling, powdered and taken with wine. Additionally, it can be used for early-stage breast abscess with redness, swelling, and pain, combined with dandelion (Pugongying), Prunella (Xiakucao), Fritillaria (Beimu), and Trichosanthes fruit (Quangualou).
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6–15 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, juice applied topically, powder sprinkled or made into a paste. Cooked form is more tonifying for Kidney and essence; raw form is more for activating blood and reducing swelling.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of Yin deficiency with fire hyperactivity.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Cornu Cervi contains gelatinous substances, phosphate, calcium carbonate, and nitrogenous compounds, as well as amino acids including aspartic acid, threonine, serine, glutamic acid, proline, glycine, and alanine.
2. Pharmacological effects: Deer antler extracts significantly increase cardiac output in anesthetized cats; extracts of the deer antler base enhance macrophage activity and promote T cell proliferation in mice, inhibit growth of mouse mammary carcinoma, and suppress mouse mammary hyperplasia.
3. Clinical reports: Mammary hyperplasia—using deer antler base injections intramuscularly 10–15 days before menstruation, 2 ml each time, twice daily, stopping at menstruation. In 86 cases treated, 29 cured, 46 improved, 11 ineffective. [Shanghai Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1980, (3):31]
