[Overview] This herb is also known as Lan Cao, Shui Xiang, Du Liang Xiang, and Da Ze Lan. It is the aerial part of Eupatorium fortunei Trucz., a plant of the Asteraceae family. It is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Hebei, Shandong, and Shanghai, with Jiangsu having the largest output. The aerial parts are harvested multiple times in spring, summer, and autumn, impurities are removed, then dried in the sun or shade.
[Properties] Pungent in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the spleen, stomach, and lung meridians.
[Actions] Aromatically transforms dampness, awakens the spleen and stimulates the appetite, induces sweating and relieves summer heat.
[Applications]
1. Used for damp turbidity obstructing the middle burner, chest fullness and epigastric distention, nausea and poor appetite, halitosis with excessive saliva, and white greasy tongue coating. Often used together with Agastache (Huo Xiang), Magnolia bark (Hou Po), and White cardamom (Bai Dou Kou).
2. Used for summer dampness and warm-damp febrile diseases. Taken alone as a decoction, it has preventive effects against summer heat. For summer dampness syndrome, it can be combined with Artemisia annua (Qing Hao) and Lotus leaf (He Ye). For early-stage warm-damp febrile disease with chills and fever, heavy-headedness, chest fullness, poor appetite, and white greasy tongue coating, it is often combined with Agastache, Apricot kernel (Xing Ren), Coix seed (Yi Ren), and Talc (Hua Shi).
3. Used for spleen dysregulation and diabetes mellitus. Overconsumption of rich and sweet foods leads to impaired qi movement and internal generation of damp turbidity, causing a sweet and greasy sensation in the mouth, known as spleen dysregulation (Pi Dan), for which this herb is the main treatment. If spleen dysregulation persists and pathogenic heat stagnates in the stomach causing diabetes, it can be combined with Trichosanthes root (Tian Hua Fen), Ophiopogon (Mai Dong), and Coptis (Huang Lian).
Additionally, this herb can be used to treat nasal congestion and sinusitis, often combined with Magnolia flower (Xin Yi) and Angelica dahurica (Bai Zhi). When pounded and applied topically, it can treat snake bites.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoct 5–10 g; use double the amount if fresh. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and applied topically.
[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of yin deficiency with blood dryness and qi deficiency.

The aerial parts contain nordepholine alkaloids.
2. Pharmacological effects: The volatile oil and its active component eupatoriochromene have significant expectorant effects; the volatile oil, eupatoriochromene, and linalyl acetate directly inhibit influenza virus; the total alkaloids from the herb inhibit tumors and, when combined with cyclophosphamide, prolong survival in mice, showing synergistic effects.

Then take 100 g of fresh herb leaves, pound into a paste, apply to the wound, cover with dressing and fix in place. Change dressing 2–3 times daily, rinsing the wound before each change, stopping when swelling subsides and consciousness clears. In a treatment of 30 cases, 20 were cured and 10 improved.
