[Overview] This herb is also known as Daji, Hongya Daji, Zi Daji, and Jiangjun Cao. It is the root of Euphorbia pekinensis Rupr., a plant of the Euphorbiaceae family. It is mainly produced in Nanjing, Yangzhou, Pizhou, and other areas in Jiangsu Province. The roots are harvested after the aerial parts wither in autumn and before sprouting in early spring. The roots are dug up, residual stems and fibrous roots removed, washed clean of soil, cut into sections, and dried in the sun or by baking.
[Properties] Bitter in taste, cold in nature, toxic. Enters the Lung, Spleen, and Kidney meridians.
[Actions] Purgative to expel retained water, reduces swelling and dissipates nodules.
[Applications]
1. Used for internal retention of water-dampness, edema with fullness and distension, ascites with dyspnea, and difficulty in urination and defecation. Often combined with jujube (Da Zao), decocted together and the jujube flesh eaten alone. For severe edema and ascites, it may be combined with Gansui and Yuanhua, as in the formula Shizao Tang (Ten Jujube Decoction). For damp-heat obstruction in the middle burner with abdominal distension like a drum, bitter taste, and vexation, it may be combined with Da Huang and Qian Niu Zi. Currently, it is commonly used to treat edema from acute and chronic nephritis, ascites from liver cirrhosis and late-stage schistosomiasis, and pleural effusion from various causes.
2. Used for carbuncles, swelling and toxicity, scrofula, and tuberculosis. Can be used both internally and externally. For carbuncles and swelling toxicity, it may be combined with Shan Ci Gu, Qian Jin Zi, and Wu Bei Zi, as in the formula Taiyi Zijin Dan; for scrofula and phlegm nodules, it can be cooked with eggs to make a medicinal food egg.
Additionally, this herb can treat gouty joint swelling and pain with limited flexion and extension, often combined with Huang Qin, Ru Xiang, and Mo Yao.
Furthermore, Euphorbia pekinensis can be combined with Yin Chen to treat damp-heat jaundice; taken alone as a decoction or powder, it can treat epilepsy and mania.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 1.5–3 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, ground into powder or made into a paste; or decocted for fumigation and washing.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in deficiency-cold syndromes and pregnancy; use with caution in weak patients. Antagonistic with licorice.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents include euphorbia glycosides, alkaloids, euphorbia pigments A, B, and C, gums, and resins.
2. Pharmacological actions: Euphorbia pekinensis stimulates the intestines, promoting peristalsis and producing a purgative effect; in experimental ascitic rats, oral administration of Euphorbia pekinensis decoction produces a significant diuretic effect; extracts dilate peripheral blood vessels and antagonize the pressor effect of adrenaline.
Note: Radix Euphorbiae Pekinensis (Jing Daji) and Radix Euphorbiae (Hong Daji) have similar effects and are often used interchangeably. However, Jing Daji has a stronger purgative and diuretic effect, while Hong Daji is more effective at reducing swelling and dissipating nodules.
