[Overview] This herb is also known as Caojue Ming, Wild Cockscomb Seed, and Dog Tail Seed. It is the mature seed of Celosia argentea L., a plant of the Amaranthaceae family. It is produced throughout most regions of China. The aerial parts are harvested or the seed spikes are picked when the fruit matures in autumn, then dried in the sun. Seeds are rubbed out and impurities removed.
[Properties] Bitter in taste, slightly cold in nature. Enters the Liver meridian.
[Actions] Clears and drains Liver fire, brightens the eyes and reduces visual obstruction.
[Applications]
1. Used for red, swollen, painful eyes with visual obstruction. Commonly used for eye redness and swelling caused by Liver fire rising, photophobia with excessive tearing, and visual obstruction. Often combined with Semen Cassiae (Juemingzi), Gardenia (Zhizi), Prunella (Xiakucao), or combined with Rabdosia (Gujingcao), Mimenghua. If Liver deficiency with heat causes blurred vision, eye dryness, and excessive tearing, it may be combined with Cuscuta (Tusizi), Lycium (Gouqizi), as in Qingxiangzi Wan (青葙子丸).
2. Used for headache and dizziness caused by Liver fire rising, often combined with Gentiana (Longdancao), Abalone Shell (Shijueming). In recent years, this herb combined with Prunella (Xiakucao), Eucommia (Duzhong), Achyranthes (Niuxi) has been used to treat hypertension with good antihypertensive effects.
[Dosage and Administration] Oral administration: decoction, 9–15 g.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in patients with mydriasis (dilated pupils) and glaucoma.

1. Chemical constituents: Semen Celosiae contains fatty oil, starch, niacin, and abundant potassium nitrate. The fatty oil is known as Celosia seed oil.
2. Pharmacology: Decoction of Semen Celosiae has a mild intraocular pressure-lowering effect, but it is gentle, slow-acting, and cannot prevent rabbit eye pressure elevation caused by water loading. Celosia seed oil has a mydriatic effect. Animal experiments have demonstrated antihypertensive effects. It also shows strong inhibitory effects against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli.
