[Overview] This herb is also known as Jinqianhua, Jinfeihua, Mantianxing, and Quanfuhua. It is the capitulum (flower head) of plants from the Asteraceae family: Inula japonica Thunb. or Inula britannica L. It is produced throughout most regions of China, mainly in Henan, Jiangsu, Hebei, and Zhejiang provinces. Henan has the largest output, while Jiangsu and Zhejiang produce the highest quality. The flowers are harvested during summer and autumn when in bloom, impurities are removed, and then dried in the shade or sun.

[Properties] Bitter, pungent, and salty in taste; slightly warm in nature. Enters the Lung, Spleen, Stomach, and Large Intestine meridians.

[Actions] Resolves phlegm, descends qi, softens hardness, promotes urination.

[Applications]
1. Used for phlegm turbidity obstructing the Lung, causing cough and asthma with excessive sputum. If cough with copious sputum is due to phlegm-heat, it is often combined with Sangbaipi (Morus bark) and Gualou (Trichosanthes fruit). If stubborn phlegm is congealed and sticky and difficult to expectorate, it can be combined with Haige shell (clam shell) and Haifushi (sea floating stone).
2. Used for vomiting and belching. When phlegm turbidity obstructs the middle and stomach qi rebels upward causing persistent vomiting and dizziness, it is often combined with Banxia (Pinellia), Chenpi (Citrus peel), and Ganjiang (dried ginger), as in the formula Xuanfuhua Tang (Inula Flower Decoction). If middle qi is deficient with phlegm turbidity obstructing internally, causing epigastric hardness, frequent belching, and vomiting of saliva, it is often combined with Daizheshi (hematite), Banxia, and Renshen (ginseng), as in Xuanfu Daizhe Tang.
3. Used for chest and epigastric fullness and distension with hypochondriac pain due to qi and blood stagnation or phlegm-fluid retention. If chest fullness and hypochondriac pain are due to liver qi stagnation, it can be combined with Xiangfu (Cyperus), Yujin (Curcuma), Qiancao (Rubia), and Honghua (safflower). If due to phlegm-fluid retention, it can be combined with Banxia, Gualou, and Guizhi (cinnamon twig). Additionally, when cooked with carp fish and taken, it can treat edema and relieve cough and asthma.
