[Overview] This herb is also known as Qimuxiang, Zangmuxiang, and Qingmuxiang. It is the root of plants from the Asteraceae family: Inula helenium L. or Inula racemosa Hook.f. It is mainly produced in Hebei province, with additional production in Xinjiang, Gansu, Shaanxi, Sichuan, and Henan provinces. Harvest occurs in autumn after the first frost when the leaves wither. The roots are cut into sections, with thicker roots longitudinally sliced into petals, then sun-dried.
[Properties] The taste is pungent and bitter; the nature is warm. It enters the spleen and liver meridians.
[Actions] Regulates qi and strengthens the spleen; relieves pain.
[Applications]
1. Used for epigastric distension and pain, poor appetite, nausea with acid regurgitation, intestinal rumbling, and diarrhea. For epigastric distension and pain, it is often combined with Huo Xiang (Agastache) and Chen Pi (Citrus peel); for poor appetite, nausea, and acid regurgitation, it is commonly paired with Zhi Qiao (Fructus Aurantii) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodes macrocephala); for intestinal rumbling and diarrhea, it is often combined with Huang Lian (Coptis), Fu Ling (Poria), and Bai Zhu.
2. Used for sprain and side stitch pain, toothache; for the former, combined with Yu Jin (Curcuma), Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis), and Qing Mu Xiang; for the latter, often used fresh, pounded and applied directly to the affected tooth.
Additionally, this herb has a fetal calming effect and can be used for restless fetus.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decocted, 3–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and applied to the affected tooth.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of yin deficiency with internal heat, dry mouth, and red tongue.

1. Chemical constituents include inulin lactone, isoinulin lactone, dihydroisoinulin lactone, inulin acid, inulin alcohol, inulin, sesquiterpenes, beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol, and others.
2. Pharmacological effects: inulin lactone and its derivatives have anthelmintic effects; inulin lactone inhibits the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in vitro and suppresses Staphylococcus aureus and Shigella dysenteriae in vivo.
