[Overview] This herb is also known as Nv Zhen Shi or Dong Qing Zi. It is the mature fruit of Ligustrum lucidum Ait., a plant of the Oleaceae family. It is mainly produced in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Hunan, and other regions. The fruit is harvested in winter when ripe, then slightly steamed or briefly blanched in boiling water, and dried in the sun.
[Properties] Taste: sweet, bitter; nature: cool. Enters the Liver and Kidney channels.
[Actions] Tonifies the Liver and Kidneys, clears deficiency heat, and improves vision.
[Applications] Used for signs of Liver and Kidney yin deficiency. In cases of Liver and Kidney deficiency with dizziness, blurred vision, soreness of the lower back, seminal emission, and weakness of the legs, it is often combined with Eclipta prostrata (Han Lian Cao), as in the Er Zhi Wan formula, or further combined with prepared Polygonum multiflorum (Zhi Shou Wu), Rehmannia glutinosa (Shu Di Huang), and Cuscuta chinensis (Tu Si Zi) to enhance efficacy, as in the Shou Wu Yan Shou Dan formula. For yin deficiency with heat signs such as dizziness, soreness of the lower back, tidal fever, and irritability, it is commonly used together with turtle shell (Gui Ban), turtle plastron (Bie Jia), Lycium bark (Di Gu Pi), and Smilax glabra (Bai Wei). For Liver and Kidney yin deficiency with insufficient essence and blood causing reduced visual acuity and unclear vision, it is often combined with Rehmannia glutinosa (Shu Di), Lycium barbarum (Gou Qi Zi), and Cuscuta chinensis (Tu Si Zi), as in the Jia Wei Kan Li Wan formula. Currently, it is widely used for central retinitis, early senile cataract, optic neuritis, and other eye diseases. For Kidney yin deficiency with turbid urination and diabetes, it is often combined with Rehmannia glutinosa (Sheng Di Huang), Trichosanthes root (Tian Hua Fen), and Achyranthes bidentata (Niu Xi), as in the Nv Zhen Tang formula.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6–12 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount applied as a plaster or eye drops. The main component, oleanolic acid, is poorly soluble in water, so it is best used in pill form. Often processed with wine to enhance its liver and kidney tonifying effects.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of spleen and stomach deficiency cold with diarrhea and yang deficiency.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents include oleanolic acid, acetyl oleanolic acid, ursolic acid, mannitol, glucose, palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid.
2. Pharmacological effects: Fructus Ligustri Lucidi enhances cellular and humoral immunity; it raises white blood cell counts reduced by chemotherapy or radiotherapy; it promotes erythropoiesis; and exhibits cardiotonic, diuretic, hepatoprotective, antitussive, laxative, antibacterial, and anticancer activities.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Hyperlipidemia: prepared as honey pills containing 5.3 g raw herb per pill, 1 pill per dose, 1 month per course. In 30 cases, the effective rate for lowering serum cholesterol was 70.6%. [Liaoning Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1981,(6):36] 2) Coronary heart disease: using Fructus Ligustri Lucidi injection (10 mg total extract per ml of ethyl acetate extract), treatment showed good results with an angina pectoris effective rate of 86.3% and marked improvement rate of 23.5%. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1982,(3):24] 3) Chronic atrophic gastritis: using Zhen Qi granules to treat 336 cases, after 3 months of medication, gastroscopy and symptom total effective rates were 74.1% and 95.0%, respectively. [Journal of Lanzhou Medical College, 1992,(2):122] 4) Senile deficiency constipation: using 30 g Fructus Ligustri Lucidi, 15 g Angelica sinensis, and 15 g raw Atractylodes macrocephala decocted as tea. In 32 cases, except 1 with no significant effect, bowel movements normalized generally within 3–7 days, with a total effective rate of 93.7%. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1998,39(9):520] 5) Recurrent oral ulcers: using single herb Fructus Ligustri Lucidi 30 g, 1 dose daily divided into 3 decoctions. After 4 doses, all ulcers healed. Follow-up for 3 months showed recurrence treated with 2 more doses healed again. [Journal of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 2001,24(2):61]
