[Overview] This herb is also known as Pangqi, Dwarf Camphor Root, and Earth Wood Fragrance. It is the tuberous root of Lindera aggregata (Sims) Kosterm. of the Lauraceae family. It is mainly produced in Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangsu, Shaanxi, and other regions. It can be harvested year-round; after removing fine roots and washing, it is called “Wuyao Ge”; when fresh, the outer bark is scraped off, sliced, and dried, it is called “Wuyao Pian”.
[Properties] Pungent in taste, warm in nature. Enters the spleen, stomach, kidney, and bladder meridians.
[Actions] Regulates qi and relieves pain, warms the kidney and disperses cold.
[Applications]
1. Used for fullness and oppression in the chest and hypochondrium, epigastric and abdominal distension and pain, headache, especially suitable for cold stagnation with qi stagnation. For chest, abdomen, and hypochondriac pain, often combined with Cyperus rotundus (Xiangfu) and Glycyrrhiza uralensis (Gancao), as in Xiao Wu Chen Tang; for epigastric and abdominal distension and pain, combined with Aucklandia lappa (Muxiang), Citrus reticulata (Qingpi), Curcuma zedoaria (Ezhu), etc.; for chest and diaphragm fullness and oppression with shortness of breath and wheezing, often combined with Aquilaria agallocha (Chenxiang), as in Si Mo Tang; for epigastric and abdominal fullness with constipation and wheezing, added with Rheum palmatum (Dahuang) and Citrus aurantium (Zhike), as in Liu Mo Tang and Liu Mo Yin Zi; for dysenteric abdominal pain with tenesmus, often combined with Coptis chinensis (Huanglian) and Pulsatilla chinensis (Baitouweng).
2. Used for cold hernia pain caused by cold stagnation and qi stagnation, menstrual abdominal pain, and postpartum abdominal pain. For cold hernia lower abdominal pain radiating to the testicles, often combined with Foeniculum vulgare (Xiaohuixiang) and Cinnamomum cassia (Rougui), as in Nuan Gan Jian; when combined with Melia toosendan (Chuan Lian Zi), it forms Tian Tai Wu Yao San. For menstrual abdominal pain due to cold stagnation and qi stagnation with poor blood circulation, often combined with Angelica sinensis (Danggui), as in Wu Yao San; for prolonged lochia with lower abdominal cold pain postpartum, often combined with Zingiber officinale prepared (Pao Jiang), Angelica sinensis (Danggui), and Ligusticum chuanxiong (Chuanxiong).
3. Used for deficiency cold of the lower origin with impaired qi transformation causing frequent urination, enuresis, or urinary retention, often combined with Alpinia oxyphylla (Yizhi Ziren) and Dioscorea opposita (Shanyao), as in Suo Quan Wan.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, ground into powder and applied topically.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of qi deficiency and internal heat; use with caution in pregnant women and those with weak constitution.

1. Chemical constituents: The root contains lindera alcohol, lindera epoxy lactone, lindera lactone, isolindera lactone, new lindera lactone, lindera root lactone, lindera enol, lindera enol acetate, lindera root alkene, lindera alkene, oxidized lindera alkene, isoxidized lindera alkene, isofuran large bull alkene, and lindera acid. It also contains magnoflorine, boldine, and annonaceous acetogenins.
2. Pharmacological effects: Radix Linderae has bidirectional regulatory effects on the gastrointestinal tract, promoting digestive juice secretion; its volatile oil taken internally excites the cerebral cortex, promotes respiration, stimulates myocardium, accelerates blood circulation, raises blood pressure, and induces sweating; topical application causes local vasodilation, accelerates blood circulation, and relieves muscle pain; the dry powder significantly shortens plasma recalcification time, promotes coagulation, thus having good hemostatic effects; aqueous extracts show high inhibitory effects on herpes simplex virus; decoction of fresh leaves inhibits Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus anthracis, beta-hemolytic streptococcus, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Shigella; alcohol extracts of the root exhibit antihistamine effects on isolated trachea.
