[Overview] This herb is also known as Xuanshi, Xuanwushi, Xitie Shi, and Tieshi. It is a spinel-group magnetite mineral of the oxide class used to pacify the liver. The main production areas are Jiangsu, Liaoning, Guangdong, Anhui, with additional sources in Shandong and Hebei. It can be harvested year-round. After removing impurities, specimens with strong magnetic attraction are selected for medicinal use.

[Actions] Pacifies the liver and subdues yang; calms the spirit and suppresses convulsions; sharpens hearing and improves vision; stabilizes qi and relieves asthma.

[Applications]
1. Used for dizziness and blurred vision due to liver and kidney deficiency, tinnitus and deafness. Commonly used for treating yin deficiency with yang hyperactivity causing dizziness and blurred vision, often combined with Bai Shao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Sheng Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae), Tian Ma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae), as in the formula Zisheng Qingyang Tang (滋生青阳汤). For kidney deficiency with cataracts and blurred vision, often taken as pills with Zhu Sha (Cinnabar) and Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata), as in Shen Qu Wan (神曲丸, also called Ci Zhu Wan 磁朱丸). For kidney deficiency with tinnitus and deafness, can be decocted with pig kidney, as in Ci Shi Shen Geng (磁石肾羹). For tinnitus and deafness after febrile disease with kidney essence deficiency, often combined with Shu Di Huang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata), Shan Zhu Yu (Fructus Corni), Shi Chang Pu (Rhizoma Acori), Wu Wei Zi (Fructus Schisandrae), as in Er Long Zuo Ci Wan (耳聋左慈丸).
2. Used for restlessness of the heart spirit, palpitations, insomnia, and pediatric convulsions, often combined with Zhu Sha, Fu Shen (Poria with hostwood), Suan Zao Ren (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae), Yuan Zhi (Radix Polygalae).
3. Used for kidney failure to grasp qi causing asthma and shortness of breath, often combined with Shu Di Huang, Hu Tao Ren (Semen Juglandis), Wu Wei Zi.
Additionally, powdered Magnetite applied externally can treat carbuncles, swelling, and traumatic bleeding.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoct 9–30 g, crushed and decocted first; or incorporated into pills. External use: appropriate amount, powdered and applied topically.

[Cautions] Not suitable for long-term or excessive use in patients with spleen and stomach deficiency.

1. Chemical composition: Magnetite mainly contains ferric oxide (Fe3O4), with ferrous oxide 31%, ferric oxide 69%, and impurities including silicon, lead, titanium, phosphorus, manganese, calcium, magnesium.
2. Pharmacological effects: Intravenous injection of ultrafine magnetite particles in rats increases hemoglobin levels, red and white blood cell counts, prolongs blood coagulation time, enhances plasma fibrinolytic activity, and strengthens neutrophil phagocytic response.
3. Clinical reports on mental disorders: Calcined magnetite powder 60 g, cinnabar powder 60 g, Shen Qu 180 g, refined with honey into 80–120 pills; taken 2–3 times daily, 1–2 pills each time.
