[Overview] This herb is also known as Tu Huangbai, Ci Huangbai, Shi Da Gong Lao, and Tu Huanglian. It is the stem or stem bark of Mahonia bealei (Fort.) Carr. and Mahonia fortunei (Lindl.) Fedde, plants of the Berberidaceae family. It is mainly produced in Zhejiang, with Sichuan, Guizhou, Hunan, and Guangxi also producing it. It can be harvested year-round by cutting the above-ground stems and branches, scraping off the outer coarse bark, then peeling off the stem bark, which is used fresh or dried.

[Properties] Bitter in taste, cold in nature. Enters the Lung, Liver, and Large Intestine meridians.

[Actions] Clears heat, dries dampness, detoxifies.

[Applications] Used for lung-heat cough, jaundice, diarrhea, dysentery, red swollen painful eyes, and heat toxin sores and ulcers.
