[Overview] This herb is also known as Zaoxiu, Chongtai root, Caoheche, and Tu Sanqi. It is the rhizome of plants from the Liliaceae family: Paris polyphylla Smith var. yunnanensis (Franch.) Hand.-Mazz. or Paris polyphylla Smith var. chinensis (Franch.) Hara. The former is mainly produced in Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou, and Guangxi provinces; the latter is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong, Fujian, and Guizhou provinces. The rhizomes are harvested in autumn when the plants are dug up, then sun-dried or baked dry, with coarse skin and fibrous roots removed.
[Properties] Bitter taste, slightly cold in nature, mildly toxic. Enters the Liver meridian.
[Actions] Clears heat and detoxifies, reduces swelling and relieves pain, extinguishes wind and calms convulsions.
[Applications]
1. Used for carbuncles, sores, mastitis, throat swelling and pain, and snake or insect bites. Zaoxiu is a common herb for surgical heat-toxin syndromes; all types of carbuncles, furuncles, and unidentified swellings and toxins can be treated both internally and externally. It is often combined with Jin Yin Hua (Lonicera), Huang Lian (Coptis), Chi Shao (Red Peony Root), Gan Cao (Licorice), etc., in formulas such as Duoming Dan. For throat swelling and pain or diphtheria, it can be ground into powder and swallowed, or combined with ox gall, bitter melon, and borneol powder for throat application. For poisonous snake bites, it is commonly combined with Banbianlian (Scutellaria barbata), Banzhilian (Barleria), and Baihua She She Cao (Hedyotis diffusa) for internal or external use.
2. Used for high fever with coma and convulsions, febrile convulsions in children, either alone or combined with Gou Teng (Uncaria), Chan Yi (Cicada molting), Quan Xie (Scorpion), etc. Currently, it is often combined with Jin Yin Hua, Bai Ju Hua (Chrysanthemum), Da Qing Ye (Isatis leaf), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon) to treat high fever and convulsions caused by epidemic meningitis, encephalitis B, heatstroke, and other conditions. Additionally, this herb has antitumor effects and is often included in compound formulas for treating malignant tumors.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction 3–9 g; powder 1–3 g per dose. External use: appropriate amount, juice applied topically, powder mixed for topical application, or fresh herb pounded and applied.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of deficiency cold syndrome, yin-type external ulcers, and pregnancy.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical Constituents: Yunnan Paris polyphylla contains β-ecdysterone and others; Paris polyphylla var. chinensis contains diosgenin saponin glycosides such as 3-O-α-L-furanosyl arabinopyranosyl (1→4)[α-L-pyranosyl rhamnosyl (1→2)] β-D-pyranosyl glucose, and diosgenin saponin glycosides 3-O-α-L-pyranosyl rhamnosyl (1→2) β-D-pyranosyl glucose.
2. Pharmacological Effects: Rhizoma Paridis exhibits antitumor activity; its methanol extract inhibits growth of HeLa tumor cells in vitro; total saponins significantly inhibit growth of mouse H22 tumor cells; decoctions show antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus, hemolytic streptococcus, meningococcus, dysentery bacillus, typhoid bacillus, paratyphoid bacillus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa to varying degrees; ethanol extracts have spermicidal effects in rats and mice; water decoctions have significant bronchodilatory effects on histamine-induced asthma.
3. Clinical Reports: (1) Acute tonsillitis: dried and roasted slices of Paris polyphylla rhizome ground into powder, taken with hot water 1.5 g three times daily; 30 cases treated with 18 markedly effective, 10 effective, 2 ineffective. [Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine, 1991, 11(7):444] (2) Epidemic parotitis: 10 g of Paris polyphylla rhizome ground with vinegar into a thick juice applied to affected area three times daily; or 20 g fresh herb pounded and mixed with appropriate vinegar applied once daily; 35 cases treated with 97.14% cure rate. [Youjiang Health, 1982, (4):54] (3) Uterine bleeding: coarse powder of Rhizoma Paridis extracted and dried into powder, encapsulated (each capsule equivalent to 2 g raw herb), two capsules orally three times daily; 300 cases treated with 286 effective, 14 ineffective, 95.3% efficacy. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1984, (34):37] (4) Phlebitis: Paris polyphylla rhizome juice ground with vinegar applied to affected area 3–4 times daily; 30 cases of phlebitis caused by intravenous injection of various anticancer drugs all cured. [New Chinese Medicine, 1987, (2):17]
