[Overview] This herb is also known as Shiqian, Shiding, Shiziba, and Shiye. It is the persistent calyx of Diospyros kaki Thunb., a species in the Ebenaceae family. It is found throughout China, mainly produced in Shandong and Henan provinces. The mature fruit calyx (with persistent flower calyx) is collected in autumn and winter, the stalk is removed, and then it is sun-dried.

[Properties] Bitter and astringent in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the stomach meridian.

[Actions] Descends rebellious qi and relieves hiccup, cools the blood and reduces swelling.

[Applications]
1. Used for persistent hiccup, often combined with Dai Zhe Shi (Hematite), Dao Dou (Sword Bean), etc.; if hiccup is due to stomach cold, often combined with Ban Xia (Pinellia), Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger), etc.; if due to stomach heat, combined with Huang Lian (Coptis), Zhu Ru (Bamboo Shavings), etc.; if due to stomach cold and spleen deficiency, combined with Ren Shen (Ginseng), Ding Xiang (Clove), etc.; if hiccup is caused by food stagnation and phlegm obstruction, combined with Cang Zhu (Atractylodes), Hou Po (Magnolia Bark), Chen Pi (Tangerine Peel), Ban Xia, etc.
2. Used for blood strangury and otitis media. For the former, Calyx of Persimmon Fruit can be burnt while preserving its nature, ground into powder, and taken with rice soup eight times daily; for the latter, combined with Ming Fan (Alum), Bing Pian (Borneol), ground into powder and blown into the ear, or prepared as ear drops.

1. Chemical constituents: Calyx of Persimmon Fruit contains oleanolic acid, betulinic acid, ursolic acid and 19α-hydroxyursolic acid, stearic acid, palmitic acid, succinic acid, eugenic acid, vanillic acid, gallic acid, β-sitosterol, hyperoside, and others.
2. Pharmacological effects: Extracts of Calyx of Persimmon Fruit administered intraperitoneally to mice significantly reduce spontaneous activity, enhance hypnotic effects, and prolong sleep duration; it has certain antifertility effects; extracts can antagonize aconitine- and barium chloride-induced arrhythmias in rats.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Neonatal pneumonia: 10 g of Calyx of Persimmon Fruit is lightly roasted over low heat, ground into fine powder, externally applied to the umbilical area, and covered with sterile gauze, changed once daily. In 35 cases treated, all were cured.
