[Overview] This product is the dried bile of the pig (Sus scrofa domestica Brisson) from the Suidae family. It is available throughout most regions of China. After slaughtering the pig, the gallbladder is removed by abdominal dissection, bile is extracted, filtered, dried, and ground into powder.
[Properties] Bitter in taste, cold in nature. Enters the Heart, Liver, Gallbladder, Lung, and Large Intestine meridians.
[Actions] Clears heat, moistens dryness, brightens the eyes, stops cough, detoxifies.
[Applications]
1. Used for febrile diseases with irritability and thirst, constipation; can be cooked with vinegar and taken orally. For constipation, fresh pig bile mixed evenly with vinegar can be used as an enema.
2. Used for red, swollen, painful eyes and corneal opacity, ear discharge. For red swollen eyes, can be made into eye drops; for corneal opacity, ground finely with calamine, borax, Coptis chinensis, and borneol for eye application; for chronic purulent otitis media, alum is soaked in bile, dried, powdered, and blown into the ear.
3. Used for cough and asthma; can be taken with white sugar or honey, or combined with Stemona root (Baibu), Aster root (Ziwan), earthworm (Dilong), tangerine peel (Chenpi), licorice (Gancao), etc.; or ground finely with earthworm, Pinellia (Banxia), and Platycodon (Jiegeng), encapsulated for oral administration.
4. Used for damp-heat jaundice, diarrhea, dysentery. For jaundice, can be encapsulated and taken orally; for cholecystitis, ground with turmeric and Curcuma aromatica, taken with Yinchen (Artemisia capillaris) decoction; for bacillary dysentery, enteritis, and indigestion, combined with mung bean powder and encapsulated.
5. Used for sore throat, carbuncles and furuncles, mumps, hemorrhoids, scrofula. For sore throat, alum and Solanum incanum ash are added into pig bile, dried, powdered, and blown into the throat; for early-stage carbuncles or mastitis, fresh pig bile mixed with raw scallion is mashed and applied topically; for mumps and hemorrhoids, pig bile is boiled into a paste and applied to affected areas; for ulcerative lymph node tuberculosis, combined with Indigo naturalis and Phellodendron bark into powder for external application.
Additionally, used for impetigo and burns, mixed with Phellodendron bark powder for external use; for vulvar itching, dissolved in warm water for washing.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: 0.3–0.6 g; taken with water or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount for sprinkling, eye drops, or enemas.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents mainly include bile acids, bile pigments, mucoproteins, lipids, and inorganic substances. Bile acids include chenodeoxycholic acid, 3α,8-hydroxy-6-oxo-5α-cholanic acid, and lithocholic acid; also contains pig cholic acid, pig deoxycholic acid, and 3β,6α-dihydroxycholanic acid.
2. Pharmacological effects: Pig gallbladder powder exhibits significant sedative effects in mice; pig cholic acid and its salts and bilirubin have certain antipyretic effects; bilirubin has cardiotonic effects on isolated frog, guinea pig, and rabbit hearts and can lower blood pressure; sodium cholate (bile salt), pig deoxycholic acid, chenodeoxycholic acid, and ursodeoxycholic acid significantly promote bile secretion and dissolve gallstones; pig deoxycholic acid, chenodeoxycholic acid, ursodeoxycholic acid, and lithocholic acid have anti-hypercholesterolemia effects in mice; pig bile promotes gastrointestinal motility and has mild laxative effects; pig bile and sodium deoxycholate have notable antitussive and expectorant effects; pig bile and its components have anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory, and spermicidal actions.
3. Clinical reports: 1. Pertussis: Fresh pig bile 2 parts, Stemona root 3 parts, white sugar 25 parts, made into pills the size of a Chinese parasol seed, taken 3 times daily; children 1–3 years old take 2 pills each time, 4–6 years old take 4 pills each time. Over 250 cases treated, cure rate over 95% within 2 weeks. [Shandong Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1984,(4):42] 2. Trichomonas vaginitis: Pig bile extract 50 mg made into suppositories, administered every other day, 5 times per course. 1452 cases treated; after 2 courses, trichomonas microscopy negative conversion rate was 97.5%. [Shaanxi Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1988, 9(6):253] 3. Mumps: Appropriate amount of pig bile juice dried into a paste by drying oven or sun exposure, applied to swollen areas. 106 cases treated; all but 1 cured.
