[Overview] This herb is also known as Weirui, Zhugenqi, and Yuzhusen. It is the rhizome of Polygonatum odoratum (Mill.) Druce, a plant of the Liliaceae family. It is mainly produced in Zhejiang, Hunan, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Henan, and also found in Jiangxi, Anhui, Shandong, Liaoning, and Jilin provinces. Harvested in autumn by digging up, removing soil and fibrous roots, washing clean, sun-dried until soft, then repeatedly rubbed and dried until no hard core remains; alternatively, steamed thoroughly, rubbed until semi-transparent, then dried.

[Properties] Taste is sweet, nature is slightly cold. Enters the Lung and Stomach meridians.

[Actions] Nourishes yin and moistens the lungs; nourishes the stomach and generates fluids.

[Applications]
1. Used for lung yin deficiency with dryness, dry cough with little sputum, dry mouth and throat; often combined with Radix Glehniae (Sha Shen), Ophiopogon japonicus (Mai Dong), and mulberry leaf (Sang Ye) for deficiency patterns, as in Sha Shen Mai Dong Tang. For cough with blood due to yin deficiency and fire, dry throat and loss of voice, combined with Mai Dong, Rehmannia glutinosa (Sheng Di Huang), and Fritillaria (Bei Mu). For heat injuring yin with phlegm-heat cough, combined with Chuan Bei Mu, Platycodon (Jie Geng), and Aster (Zi Wan), as in Yuzhu Yin Zi.
2. Used for stomach yin deficiency with dry mouth, thirst, and poor appetite. For late-stage febrile diseases where stomach yin has not recovered, or visceral disharmony with heat injuring stomach yin, hunger without desire to eat, dry mouth and tongue, combined with Sha Shen, Mai Dong, Sheng Di Huang, as in Yuzhu Mai Men Dong Tang. For stomach heat injuring fluids causing diabetes-like thirst, combined with Trichosanthes root (Tian Hua Fen), Chinese yam (Shan Yao), Sheng Di Huang, and Sheng Ge Gen, as in Feng Yuan Yin.
3. Used for yin-deficient constitution with external wind-warmth invasion, dry cough with little sputum, irritability, dry mouth; often combined with mint (Bo He), fermented soybean (Dou Chi), and Jie Geng, as in modified Weirui Tang. For external cold with internal heat, fever without sweating, headache, chest tightness, dry throat, combined with Ephedra (Ma Huang), Angelica pubescens (Du Huo), gypsum (Shi Gao), and Bai Wei, as in Weirui Tang.
Additionally, this herb nourishes heart yin and clears heart heat; used for heat injuring heart yin with irritability, night sweating, palpitations, combined with Mai Dong, Ziziphus spinosa seed (Suan Zao Ren), and Schisandra (Wu Wei Zi).

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6–12 g; can be made into paste, infused in wine, or included in pills and powders.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The rhizome contains Yuzhu mucopolysaccharides (D-fructose, D-mannitol, D-glucose, and galacturonic acid), Yuzhu fructans, steroid compounds such as polygonatum sterol and its glycosides. Also contains kaempferol, quercetin glycosides, vitamin A, alkaloids, niacin, starch, etc.
2. Pharmacological effects: Decoction of Yuzhu can dilate peripheral blood vessels and coronary arteries, has anti-hypoxia and cardiotonic effects, lowers blood lipids and blood sugar, and alleviates atherosclerotic plaque formation; exhibits antioxidant effects and can prolong biological lifespan; has adrenal cortex hormone-like effects; inhibits growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
3. Clinical reports: Hyperlipidemia—Yuzhu and Codonopsis pilosula (Dang Shen), each 1.25 g, crushed and made into honey pills, 4 pills per dose, twice daily, observed in 50 cases with a total effective rate of 84%. [Liaoning Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1980, (1):6]
