[Overview] This herb is also known as Chinese star anise, star anise, star anise spice, and five-spice star anise. It is the mature fruit of Illicium verum Hook.f., a plant of the Illiciaceae family. It is distributed along the coastal regions of China, with the highest production in Liaoning and Shandong provinces. The spring fruit is harvested in April when it ripens and falls to the ground, then dried in the sun; the autumn fruit is collected in October to November, then boiled in hot water for about 5–10 minutes with stirring, removed, and dried or oven-dried.

[Properties] Pungent in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Liver, Kidney, and Spleen meridians.

[Actions] Warms yang and disperses cold, regulates qi and relieves pain.

[Applications]
1. Used for cold hernia abdominal pain and testicular heaviness. The former is often combined with Evodia rutaecarpa (Wu Zhu Yu) and scallion white; the latter is often combined with Citrus reticulata seed and Litchi seed.
2. Used for kidney deficiency lower back pain, often combined with Eucommia ulmoides (Du Zhong), Dipsacus asper (Chuan Duan), and Achyranthes bidentata (Gou Ji).
3. Used for epigastric and abdominal cold pain, vomiting, and poor appetite, often combined with fresh ginger, Amomum villosum (Sha Ren), and Aucklandia lappa (Mu Xiang).
Additionally, classical formulas use this herb to treat dry and damp tinea pedis.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The fruit contains anise oil, fatty oil, protein, resin, and others. The main components of the anise essential oil are anethole, with small amounts of methyl chavicol, anise phenol, anisaldehyde, anisic acid, anisone, pinene, myrcene, limonene, 1,8-cineole, and safrole.
2. Pharmacological effects: The aqueous decoction of star anise inhibits Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Bacillus subtilis; the alcohol extract shows inhibitory effects in vitro against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as common pathogenic fungi; anise camphor increases white blood cell count and exhibits estrogenic activity.
3. Clinical reports: Leukopenia—using the main components extracted from star anise fruit and leaves to produce “Shengbaining,” administered orally on an empty stomach, twice daily, 3 capsules each time (each capsule contains 150 mg of crude drug). In 452 cases observed, the effective rates for leukopenia caused by tumor chemotherapy and radiotherapy were 88.5% and 87.3%, respectively. [Pharmaceutical Bulletin, 1981, 16(5):311]
