[Overview] This herb is also known as Liver Inflammation Herb, Small Green Fish Gallbladder, and Soil Jaundice Medicine. It is the whole herb of Swertia mileensis T.N.Ho et W.L.Shi from the Gentianaceae family. It is mainly produced in Yunnan. Harvested during the flowering and fruiting periods in summer and autumn, it is dried in the sun or used fresh.
[Properties] Bitter in taste, cold in nature. Enters the liver, gallbladder, and bladder meridians.
[Actions] Clears heat and promotes urination to remove dampness, detoxifies and reduces swelling.
[Applications]
1. Used for damp-heat jaundice, diarrhea and dysentery, and urinary tract infections. For jaundice, it can be combined with Yin Chen (Artemisia capillaris), Shan Zhi (Gardenia jasminoides), Hu Zhang (Polygonum cuspidatum), etc.; for diarrhea and dysentery, it is suitable to combine with Huang Lian (Coptis chinensis), Huang Bai (Phellodendron amurense), Ma Chi Xian (Portulaca oleracea), etc.; for hot painful urination with urinary retention and pain, it can be combined with Mu Tong (Akebia caulis), Hua Shi (Talcum), Sheng Di (Rehmannia glutinosa), etc.
2. Used for toxic heat sore throat and red swollen painful eyes. For sore throat, it is often combined with She Gan (Belamcanda chinensis), Ma Bo (Lasiosphaera calvatia), Jie Geng (Platycodon grandiflorus), etc.; for red swollen painful eyes, decoctions are used externally for washing or the herb is pounded and applied topically.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Herb Swertia mileensis contains japonicoside, swertiamarin, swertiamide lactone, oleanolic acid, mangiferin, and others.
2. Pharmacological effects: The oleanolic acid contained in Herb Swertia mileensis has a protective effect against acute liver injury induced by carbon tetrachloride in rats, reducing serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity, decreasing hepatic triglyceride accumulation, alleviating hepatocyte degeneration and necrosis, and increasing glycogen storage. The flavonoids, bitter juice, and japonicoside in Herb Swertia mileensis also inhibit ALT elevation and exert hepatoprotective effects.
3. Clinical reports: Acute hepatitis: Using Herb Swertia mileensis extract tablets (each tablet contains 0.3 g), 6 tablets per dose, three times daily; or Herb Swertia mileensis injection (each 1 ml contains 1 g of raw herb), 2 ml per dose, twice daily by intramuscular injection. A total of 422 cases of acute viral hepatitis were treated, with 392 cured, 18 improved, and 12 ineffective, for an overall effective rate of 97.2%.
