[Overview] This herb is also known as Baiguapi or White Winter Melon Peel. It is the outer fruit peel of Benincasa hispida (Thunb.) Cogn., a plant of the Cucurbitaceae family. It is produced in most regions of China. The fruit is harvested when mature in late summer to early autumn. When consuming winter melon, the outer peel is collected after peeling and dried in the sun.
[Properties] Sweet in taste, cold in nature. Enters the Spleen and Small Intestine meridians.
[Actions] Promotes urination and reduces edema.
[Applications]
1. Used for edema with fullness and difficulty urinating, especially when caused by damp-heat. Commonly combined with Adzuki bean (Chi Xiao Dou), Polyporus (Zhu Ling), and Alisma (Ze Xie). In modern practice, it is often used to treat acute and chronic nephritis, combined with Corn silk (Yu Mi Xu), Imperata root (Bai Mao Gen), and Poria (Fu Ling). For chronic nephritis with edema and proteinuria, it can be decocted together with raw Astragalus (Sheng Huang Qi) and Codonopsis (Dang Shen).
2. Used for summer heat causing thirst and scanty, dark urine. Winter Melon Peel can be decocted with Watermelon Peel as a tea substitute. If summer heat is accompanied by dampness, Coix seed (Yi Yi Ren), Talc (Hua Shi), and Hyacinth bean (Bian Dou) may be added.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decocted as a soup, 9–30 g.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents include various volatile components, triterpenoids, and cholesterol derivatives. It also contains vitamins B1, B2, and C, niacin, carotene, glucose, fructose, sucrose, organic acids, starch, and inorganic elements such as sodium, potassium, calcium, iron, manganese, and zinc.
2. Clinical report on diabetes: 1000 g of Winter Melon Peel is decocted with 2000 g water, boiled six times for 30 minutes each, and the filtrate concentrated to 500 ml and cooled. Separately, 1.5 g musk is ground with an appropriate amount of 95% ethanol into a paste, then mixed into the concentrated decoction, stirred well, and stored refrigerated or in a cool place. Dosage is 15–30 ml orally, three times daily. One course lasts 10 days. In a total of 21 cases treated, significant improvement was observed in thirst, urine volume, and hunger sensation.
