[Overview] This herb is also known as Suye, Wrinkled Perilla, Red Perilla, and Purple Seaweed. It is the leaf (or with young shoots) of Perilla frutescens (L.) Britt., a plant of the Lamiaceae family. It is produced in most regions nationwide, mainly in Hubei, Henan, Sichuan, Jiangsu, Guangxi, Guangdong, Zhejiang, Hebei, Shandong, Shanxi, and other places. Harvested in summer when branches and leaves are luxuriant, it is spread on the ground or hung in a ventilated place to dry in the shade, then leaves are picked off after drying.

[Properties] Pungent in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Lung and Spleen meridians.

[Actions] Releases the exterior and disperses cold, regulates Qi and harmonizes the stomach, calms the fetus, detoxifies.

[Applications]
1. Used for exterior wind-cold syndrome with symptoms of aversion to cold, fever, headache, nasal congestion, and absence of sweating. Often combined with Qiang Huo and Fang Feng, as in Su Qiang Da Biao Tang (苏羌达表汤). For exterior cold with cough, often combined with Qian Hu, Xing Ren, Jie Geng, as in Xing Su San (杏苏散). For exterior wind-cold with internal Qi stagnation, chest and epigastric fullness, nausea, and belching, combined with Chen Pi and Xiang Fu, as in Xiang Su San (香苏散).
2. Used for Qi stagnation and rebellious Qi symptoms. For spleen and stomach Qi stagnation with chest discomfort, nausea, and vomiting, often combined with Chen Pi, Ban Xia, Huo Xiang, as in Huo Xiang Zheng Qi San (藿香正气散). For Qi stagnation with phlegm accumulation and sensation of obstruction in the throat, often combined with Ban Xia and Hou Po. For damp-heat obstruction with rebellious stomach Qi causing vomiting and nausea, combined with Huang Lian. For phlegm turbidity obstructing the lungs with cough, asthma, and copious sputum, often combined with Xing Ren and Lai Fu Zi.
3. Used for restless fetus and pregnancy-related nausea, often combined with Chen Pi, Mu Xiang, and Sha Ren.
4. Used to detoxify fish and crab poison; can be decocted alone or combined with Sheng Jiang (fresh ginger).
Additionally, externally used as a decoction for fumigation and washing to treat scrotal eczema.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 5–9 g; or crushed and taken as juice. External use: appropriate amount, crushed and applied topically or used as a wash.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of Qi deficiency exterior syndrome or vomiting due to stomach heat.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Perilla leaf contains volatile oil, mainly perillaldehyde, limonene, β-caryophyllene, α-phellandrene, and perilla alcohol. Wild Perilla leaf also contains volatile oil, mainly perillaketone, levoperillaldehyde, dihydroperilla alcohol, α-pinene, β-pinene, camphene, dextrorotatory limonene, levomenthol, menthol, menthone, eugenol, dill ether, myristicin, etc.
2. Pharmacological effects: Perilla can reduce bronchial secretions, relieve bronchial spasms, and has significant antitussive and expectorant effects; aqueous extracts of Perilla leaf and methanol extracts of wild Perilla have certain sedative effects; decoctions and tinctures orally administered have mild antipyretic effects in rabbits; aqueous decoctions inhibit Staphylococcus aureus; extracts inhibit fungi; wild Perilla injection has astringent and hemostatic effects on local wounds in animals, shortens coagulation time and prothrombin time, possibly due to condensed tannins; inhibits ADP- or collagen-induced platelet aggregation; Perilla oil raises blood glucose in rabbits; ethanol extracts of Perilla leaf enhance spleen lymphocyte immune function, while ethanol extracts and perillaldehyde have immunosuppressive effects; Perilla leaf protects against radiation-induced skin damage and has significant antioxidant effects.
3. Clinical reports: Cervical bleeding—Perilla leaf water extract (1 ml containing 2 g crude drug) sterilized and used to soak swabs, cotton balls, or gauze applied to cervical bleeding sites. In 108 cases mainly due to polyp removal or biopsy wound bleeding, the total effective rate reached 79.63%. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1988, (8):49]
