[Overview] This herb is also known as Duck’s Tongue Grass, Bamboo Leaf Grass, Duck’s Foot Grass, and Bamboo Joint Grass. It is the whole herb of Commelina communis L., a plant of the Commelinaceae family. It is produced in the southeastern regions of China. The aerial parts are harvested in summer and autumn, used fresh or dried in the shade.

[Properties] Taste: sweet and bland; nature: cold. Enters the Lung, Stomach, and Bladder meridians.

[Actions] Clears heat and detoxifies, promotes urination and reduces swelling.

[Applications]
1. Used for fever. For wind-heat common cold with fever and chills, often combined with Mulberry Leaf and Chrysanthemum; if heat enters the Qi level with high fever and thirst, it can be combined with Gypsum and Anemarrhena.
2. Used for sore throat, erysipelas, and abscesses. For heat toxin accumulation causing sore throat, it can be decocted with Isatis leaf, Puffball, and Achyranthes root, and the herb’s juice can be frequently gargled; for erysipelas, abscesses, carbuncles, and snake bites, fresh herb is pounded and applied topically, and combined with Viola, Dandelion, and Wild Chrysanthemum for decoction.
3. Used for edema, difficult urination, and painful urinary dribbling. For edema and difficult urination, often combined with Plantain Seed, Alisma, and Lophatherum; for damp-heat downward flow causing painful urinary dribbling, often combined with Dianthus, Plantain Seed, and Achyranthes.
Additionally, this herb can be used for damp-heat jaundice and dysentery; the former is often combined with Artemisia and Gardenia, the latter with Coptis, Cortex Fraxini, and Sanguisorba.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 15–30 g; fresh herb 60–90 g; or juice taken orally. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and applied topically or used as a gargle.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The whole herb contains levodopa lactone, iridoids, β-sitosterol, p-hydroxycinnamic acid, carotenoid glycosides, D-mannitol, and n-triacontanol. The aerial parts contain alkaloids.
2. Pharmacological effects: Decoctions of Herb Commelinae inhibit Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus albus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella typhi. The effective antibacterial component is p-hydroxycinnamic acid; it also has certain anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antitussive effects.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Acute viral hepatitis: Herb Commelinae 30–60 g, decocted and taken twice daily for 15–20 days as one course. A total of 100 cases treated with a 100% cure rate. [Zhejiang Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1985, 20(2):61]
(2) Acute tonsillitis: Treatment group of 112 cases used fresh Herb Commelinae 60 g, strongly decocted and strained, with 30 g rock sugar added, taken cold three times daily; control group of 102 cases received penicillin 800,000 units intramuscularly three times daily. Results: treatment group had 86 cases excellent, 24 good, 2 poor; control group had 23 excellent, 28 good, 51 poor; cure rates were 100% and 64.7%, respectively.
