[Overview] This herb is also known as Menghua, Laomenghua, Jigutouhua, and Nuomihua. It is the flower bud and inflorescence of Buddleja officinalis Maxim., a plant of the Loganiaceae family. It is mainly produced in Hubei, Sichuan, Henan, Shaanxi, and Yunnan provinces, with larger yields from Hubei and Sichuan. The flowers are harvested in spring before blooming and dried in the sun.

[Properties] Sweet in taste, slightly cold in nature. Enters the Liver meridian.

[Actions] Dispel wind and clear heat, nourish the liver and brighten the eyes, reduce corneal opacity.

[Applications]
1. Used for wind-heat in the Liver meridian causing red, swollen, painful eyes with discharge and corneal opacity. For Liver fire causing red, swollen, painful eyes, often combined with Chrysanthemum flower, Abalone shell (Shi Jue Ming), and White Tribulus (Bai Ji Li), as in the formula Mimenghua San (密蒙花散). If complicated by damp-heat causing red, swollen, painful eyes with weeping and erosion of the eyelids, it can be combined with Atractylodes (Bai Zhu), Gentiana (Long Dan Cao), and Coptis (Huang Lian). For corneal opacity, it can be combined with Cicada slough (Chan Tui) and White Tribulus.
2. Used for Liver blood deficiency causing blurred vision and dry eyes, combined with Angelica (Dang Gui), Polygonum multiflorum (He Shou Wu), and Mulberry seed (Sang Shen Zi). If Liver and Kidney yin deficiency with virtual fire rising causing blurred vision, red eyes sensitive to heat, or corneal opacity, it can be combined with Chrysanthemum flower, Lycium fruit (Gou Qi Zi), and White Tribulus.
3. Used for night blindness, combined with Abutilon seed (Qing Xiang Zi), Cassia seed (Cao Jue Ming), Nacrite (Ye Ming Sha), and pig liver powder, all ground and taken orally.

1. Chemical constituents: The flowers contain various glycosides such as Buddlejasaponin (Zuiyu Cao glycoside), Mimeng terpene glycoside, Peach leaf coral glycoside, Zichol, Ziguo glycoside, para-methoxy cinnamoyl zichol, Eugenol glycoside, and Sea urchin glycoside.

Pharmacological effects: The crude aqueous extract of Flos Buddlejae inhibits cytotoxins induced in cultured liver cells in vitro; the contained Buddlejasaponin has anti-inflammatory effects, significantly inhibiting increased capillary permeability and edema in inflammatory foci; Buddlejasaponin also has antispasmodic effects, inhibiting increased tension of isolated rat small intestine induced by barium chloride, histamine, and acetylcholine.
