[Overview] This herb is also known as Fanbaicai, Tianqingdibai, and Liji Grass. It is the whole herb of Potentilla chinensis Ser. from the Rosaceae family. It is found in most parts of China, with the largest production in Shandong and Liaoning provinces. The whole herb with roots is harvested from April to October, removing flowering and fruiting branches, then washed and dried.

[Properties] Bitter in taste, cold in nature. Enters the liver and large intestine meridians.

[Actions] Clears heat and dries dampness, cools the blood and stops dysentery.

[Applications]
1. Used for damp-heat diarrhea and dysentery, umbilical and abdominal pain, and leukorrhea. For diarrhea, dysentery, and abdominal pain, it can be decocted alone or combined with Coptis chinensis (Huanglian), Phellodendron amurense (Huangbai), Cortex Fraxini (Qinpi), Amaranthus tricolor (Tiexian Cai), and Dianthus superbus (Dijin Cao). Currently, it is used to treat acute bacterial dysentery and amoebic dysentery by retaining its decoction for enema. For damp-heat leukorrhea, it can be combined with Sophora flavescens (Kushen) and Phellodendron amurense (Huangbai) for decoction.
2. Used for bleeding due to blood heat, such as hematemesis, hematochezia, hematuria, and metrorrhagia. It can be combined with Dryopteris crassirhizoma (Guanzhong), Imperata cylindrica root (Baimaogen), carbonized Cirsium japonicum (Xiaojitan), and carbonized Platycladus orientalis (Cebaitan) for decoction. For external bleeding from trauma, the root can be ground into powder or fresh herb mashed and applied externally.
3. Used for carbuncles, boils, and toxic swellings, either alone or combined with Chrysanthemum indicum (Yejuhua) and Lonicera japonica (Jinyinhua), for both internal and external use.
Additionally, this herb can be used for pertussis and rheumatic arthralgia.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–15 g. External use: appropriate amount, mashed and applied or decocted for washing.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The whole herb contains quercetin, kaempferol, gallic acid, azelaic acid, and 3,3′,4′-trimethoxy- and galloyl derivatives.
2. Pharmacological effects: The whole herb and its contained gallic acid and quercetin exhibit antibacterial activity; they have inhibitory effects on isolated frog and rabbit hearts, inhibit isolated and in vivo rabbit intestines, dilate isolated guinea pig bronchi, and stimulate isolated guinea pig uterus.
3. Clinical reports: For intestinal trichomoniasis, decoction of Herb Potentillae Chinensis (10 ml containing 7.5 g dry herb) taken three times daily, adults 30 ml each time, children 10–20 ml.
