[Overview] This herb is also known as Jinjincao, Didin, Didincao, and Zididing. It is the whole herb of Viola yedoensis Makino from the Violaceae family. It is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, and other regions. The whole herb with flowers or fruits is dug up in spring and autumn, washed clean of soil, and dried in the sun.

[Properties] Bitter and pungent in taste, cold in nature. Enters the Heart and Liver meridians.

[Actions] Clears heat and detoxifies, cools the blood and reduces swelling.

[Applications]
1. Used for carbuncles, furuncles, erysipelas, and poisonous snake bites. Commonly combined with Lonicera japonica (Jinyinhua), Taraxacum mongolicum (Pugongying), and wild chrysanthemum (Yejuhua), as in the formula Wuwei Xiaodu Yin (Five-Ingredient Detoxifying Drink). For treating breast abscesses, often combined with Pugongying; for intestinal abscesses, combined with Rheum palmatum (Dahuang), Sargentodoxa cuneata (Xuèténg), Patrinia scabiosifolia (Baijiangcao), etc.; for snake bites, fresh herb is pounded and applied topically or combined with realgar (Xionghuang) for external use.
2. Used for heat toxin measles and febrile diseases with rash. For measles with intense heat toxin, combined with Lithospermum erythrorhizon (Zicao), Arctium lappa seed (Niubangzi), etc.; for febrile diseases where heat enters the nutritive level causing skin rashes and a crimson tongue, combined with Rhinoceros horn (Xijiao), Scrophularia ningpoensis (Xuanshen), Moutan cortex (Mudanpi), etc. Additionally, this herb can be used for red, swollen, and painful eyes, combined with Chrysanthemum flower (Juhua) and Cicada molting (Chantui).

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 15–30 g; fresh herb dosage is doubled. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and applied topically.

[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of yin deficiency with unformed swelling and in those with spleen and stomach cold deficiency.

1. Chemical Constituents: The whole herb contains stearic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, trans-p-hydroxycinnamic acid, succinic acid, didin amide (N-(24-hydroxyphenethyl) amide), kaempferol-3-O-rhamnoside. A high molecular weight component inhibiting HIV activity has also been isolated, identified as a sulfated polysaccharide with molecular weight between 10,000 and 15,000.
2. Pharmacological Effects: Decoctions of Herba Violae show varying degrees of inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes type A, Streptococcus agalactiae type B, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans, and other pathogens; aqueous extracts inhibit Trichophyton rubrum; alcohol and water extracts inhibit Leptospira interrogans; extracts at concentrations below toxic levels can completely inhibit HIV growth.
