[Overview] This herb is also known as Guanzhong, Guanjie, Northeast Guanzhong, and Eastern Mianma. It is the rhizome and leaf stalk residues of Dryopteris crassirhizoma Nakai, a plant of the Dryopteridaceae family. It is mainly produced in Northeast China, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, and Gansu provinces. Harvested in autumn by digging up the whole plant, removing leaf stalks and fibrous roots, washing off mud and sand, then drying in the sun.

[Properties] Bitter in taste, slightly cold in nature, with mild toxicity. Enters the Liver and Stomach meridians.

[Actions] Clears heat and detoxifies, cools the blood and stops bleeding, kills parasites.

[Applications]
1. Used to prevent and treat wind-heat common cold, influenza, epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis, measles, and epidemic parotitis. Guanzhong can be used alone or combined with Da Qing Ye (Folium Isatidis) and Ban Lan Gen (Radix Isatidis) decocted together and taken orally.
2. Used for bleeding due to blood heat. For vomiting blood, it can be combined with Xue Yu Tan (charred human blood) and Ce Bai Ye (Folium Platycladi) in formulas such as Guanzhong Tang; for lung-heat hemoptysis, combined with Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis) in formulas like Guanzhong San; for metrorrhagia, Guanzhong stir-fried with rice and taken with wine or vinegar, or combined with San Qi (Radix Notoginseng) ground into powder; for intestinal wind with bloody stools, combined with Jing Jie (Herba Schizonepetae), Bai Fan (Alumen), and Zao Jiao (Fructus Gleditsiae) in formulas such as Si Sheng San.
3. Used for breast abscess and sores. For unruptured breast abscess, Guanzhong powder is applied topically to the swelling; for hemorrhoids, combined with Bi Xie (Rhizoma Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae) in equal parts, ground into powder and made into pills, as in Sheng Jin Wan.
4. Used for parasitic abdominal pain. For roundworms, combined with Ku Lian Pi (Cortex Meliae) and He Shi (Rhizoma Coptidis) together; for hookworm disease, combined with Lei Wan (Radix Euphorbiae) and Bing Lang (Semen Arecae); for parasitic abdominal pain with constipation, combined with Wu Mei (Fructus Mume) and Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei).
5. Used for lacquer sores and tinea. For lacquer sores, used alone as powder externally applied to affected areas; for tinea, combined with Wu Zhu Yu (Fructus Evodiae) and Guan Gui (Ramulus Cinnamomi) ground into powder, mixed with vinegar and applied externally.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 4.5–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, ground into powder and applied topically. For detoxification and killing parasites, use raw; for hemostasis, use charred.

[Cautions] This herb is cold in nature and mildly toxic. It should be used with caution in cases of spleen and stomach deficiency cold, yin deficiency with internal heat, and during pregnancy.

1. Chemical constituents: The rhizome contains mianmasanic acid, huangmianmasanic acid, baimianmasu, northeast guanzhongsu, isopentenyl adenosine, and triterpenoids including liribrene, 9(11)-fernene, dryopteris ketone, and liribinol.
2. Pharmacological effects: Guanzhong has anthelmintic effects, showing strong toxicity against tapeworms, causing paralysis so they cannot adhere to the intestinal wall and are expelled with laxatives; its decoction inhibits various influenza viruses, Japanese encephalitis virus, Coxsackie virus, adenovirus, and bacteria including Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus species, and Staphylococcus aureus to varying degrees; extracts injected intraperitoneally inhibit cervical cancer U14, S180 sarcoma, B22 brain tumor, and ARS ascitic tumors; subcutaneous injection, vaginal administration, and gavage in mice show significant anti-pregnancy effects; ether extracts strongly contract isolated uteri of rabbits and guinea pigs; extracts increase uterine weight and cause vaginal epithelial keratinization, exhibiting estrogen-like effects.
