[Overview] This herb is also known as Lu Ti Cao, Po Xue Dan, Lu Han Cao, and Lu An Cha. It is the whole herb of Pyrola calliantha H.Andres or common Pyrola decorata H.Andres from the Pyrolaceae family. It is produced in most regions of China. It can be harvested year-round, cleaned of soil and impurities, sun-dried until the leaves become soft and shriveled, then piled and pressed to generate heat, turning both sides of the leaves purple-red or purple-brown, and then dried again.
[Properties] Taste: sweet and bitter; nature: warm. Enters the Liver and Kidney meridians.
[Actions] Dispels wind-dampness, tonifies Liver and Kidney, strengthens sinews and bones, stops bleeding.
[Applications]
1. Used for wind-damp painful obstruction, soreness and weakness of the lumbar region and knees, and joint stiffness. Commonly used for chronic wind-damp painful obstruction with Liver and Kidney deficiency, often combined with Du Huo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Lao Guan Cao (Herba Ecliptae), and others; for Kidney deficiency low back pain and soft sinews and bones, combined with Du Zhong (Cortex Eucommiae), Niu Xi (Radix Achyranthis Bidentatae), Tu Si Zi (Semen Cuscutae), etc.
2. Used for various bleeding syndromes. For hemoptysis due to pulmonary tuberculosis, combined with Bai Ji (Rhizoma Bletillae) and others; for metrorrhagia, often combined with charred Chen Zong Tan and Di Yu Tan; for traumatic bleeding, fresh herb can be pounded and applied topically alone.
3. Used for chronic cough due to lung deficiency or prolonged cough with deficiency asthma, combined with Wu Wei Zi (Fructus Schisandrae), Bai He (Bulbus Lilii), etc.
Additionally, this herb can be used externally for allergic dermatitis, ulcers and carbuncles, insect and snake bites by decocting and washing externally.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–15 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and applied topically or powdered and sprinkled; or decoction used for washing.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Herba Pyrolae contains N-phenyl-2-naphthylamine, Umbelliferone, Arbutin, Gallic acid, Proto-catechuic acid, Pyrola glycosides, and kidney leaf Pyrola glycosides. Common Pyrola contains Pyrola glycosides, Kaempferol-3-O-glucoside, Quercetin-3-O-glucoside, etc.
2. Pharmacological effects: Decoction of Herba Pyrolae significantly dilates animal blood vessels and increases blood flow; it markedly increases the E-rosette formation rate of human lymphocytes in vitro and promotes lymphocyte transformation; it significantly inhibits carrageenan-induced arthritis in rats and has antagonistic effects on cotton pellet granuloma in rats, indicating strong anti-inflammatory effects; the decoction and pyrola glycosides inhibit Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella flexneri, Salmonella typhi, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa to varying degrees; constituents such as N-phenyl-2-naphthylamine, Umbelliferone, Gallic acid, and pyrola glycosides inhibit P388 lymphocytic leukemia cells; water extracts inhibit arachidonic acid-induced platelet aggregation.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Pneumonia: intravenous drip and intramuscular injection of pyrola glycoside injection at total daily doses of 190 mg, 400 mg, and 960 mg in three groups. A total of 80 cases treated, with 68 cured, 12 ineffective, total effective rate 85%. [Sichuan Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1983,(6):23]
2) Cervical vertigo: intramuscular injection of Herba Pyrolae injection (2 ml per vial, containing 0.5 g crude drug), twice daily, 4 ml each time, combined with neck massage and traction. A total of 322 cases treated, with 47 cured, 127 markedly effective, 125 improved, 23 ineffective, total effective rate 92.8%. [Shaanxi Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1990,11(10):450]
3) Vulvar leukoplakia: Herba Pyrolae, Yin Yang Huo (Herba Epimedii), Cicada slough each 30 g, wrapped in gauze, decocted to about 3000 ml, sitz bath at 36–42°C for 15 minutes, once or twice daily. After bathing, wipe vulva dry and apply acetic acid anti-inflammatory urea ointment to lesions. A total of 108 cases treated, 92 cured, 15 markedly effective, 1 ineffective, total effective rate 99%.
