[Overview] This herb is also known as Hongdou, Hongkou, Hongkou, Liangjiangzi. It is the mature fruit of the Zingiberaceae plant Alpinia galanga Willd. It is mainly produced in Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, with Yunnan and Sichuan also producing it. The fruit is harvested in autumn when it turns red, impurities are removed, and it is dried in the shade.
[Properties] Pungent in taste, warm in nature. Enters the spleen and lung meridians.
[Actions] Dries dampness and disperses cold, aids digestion and awakens the spleen.
[Applications] 1. Used for cold-damp obstruction in the middle burner, epigastric and abdominal cold pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and lack of appetite. Often combined with Piper longum (Biba), cinnamon bark (Guixin), and Aconitum (Fuzi), as in the formula Hongdoukou Wan (Red Galanga Pill).
2. Used for food accumulation with abdominal pain, can be combined with hawthorn (Shanzha) and radish seed (Laifuzi). Additionally, this herb can detoxify alcohol poisoning and may be used singly with salt processing; it can also treat wind-cold toothache, either by insufflating the powdered herb into the nose or mixing with saliva from the gums.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–6 g. External use: appropriate amount, powdered and insufflated into the nose or applied topically.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of yin deficiency with heat.

Chemical constituents: The fruit contains racemic 1′-acetoxy-piperonyl acetate, trans-3,4-dimethoxycinnamyl alcohol, trans-4-methoxycinnamyl alcohol, p-hydroxycinnamyl alcohol, 1′-acetoxy-eugenol acetate, volatile oils, etc. The seeds also contain galangol A and B, galangolide, and other sesquiterpenes.
2. Pharmacological effects: The 1′-acetoxy-piperonyl acetate and 1′-acetoxy-eugenol acetate in Fructus Galangae exhibit anti-ulcer effects in rats; the volatile oil from the rhizome shows antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria, yeasts, and some dermatophytes.
