[Overview] This herb is also known as Bamboo Broom Seed, Broom Herb Seed, Iron Broom Handle Seed, and Broom Seed. It is the mature fruit of Kochia scoparia (L.) Schrad., a plant of the Chenopodiaceae family. It is widely distributed throughout most regions of China. The whole plant is harvested in autumn when the fruit matures, then dried in the sun and the fruit is threshed off.

[Properties] Taste: pungent, bitter; nature: cold. Enters the Kidney and Bladder meridians.

[Actions] Clears heat and promotes urination, dispels wind and relieves itching.

[Applications]
1. Used for damp-heat strangury, edema, and difficult urination. For damp-heat accumulation in the bladder with dribbling, scanty, and painful urination, it can be decocted alone or combined with Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen), Zhuling (Polyporus), etc. For painful strangury due to urinary stones, it should be combined with Jin Qian Cao (Lysimachiae Herba), Hai Jin Sha (Lygodii Spora), Shí Wěi (Pyrrosiae Folium), and others. For acute edema with difficult urination, it can be combined with floating duckweed (Fu Ping), Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), and Mu Zei (Equiseti Herba).
2. Used for damp-heat vaginal discharge and dysentery. For damp-heat vaginal discharge, it can be combined with Huang Bai (Phellodendri Cortex), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Che Qian Zi, Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma) and decocted together. If accompanied by vulvar itching, it can be combined with She Chuang Zi (Cnidii Fructus), Bai Xian Pi (Dictamni Cortex), Kushen (Sophorae Radix), etc., for fumigation and local washing. For damp-heat dysentery, it can be combined with Di Yu (Sanguisorbae Radix) and Shi Liu Pi (Punicae Pericarpium).
3. Used for eczema, moist sores, and skin itching. Commonly used externally by decocting with Bai Fan (Alumen) for washing, or combined with Kushen, Bai Xian Pi, Huang Bai, etc., for internal decoction. For urticaria with skin itching, it can be combined with Li Chan Yi (Cicadae Periostracum), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Sheng Di (Rehmanniae Radix), and others.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–15 g; or used in pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, decocted for washing.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases without damp-heat or with excessive urination.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The seeds contain oleanolic acid, triterpenoid saponins, fatty oils, etc.
2. Pharmacological actions: The aqueous extract of Fructus Kochiae Scopariae inhibits various skin fungi and Salmonella typhi; the water extract suppresses phagocytic function of the mononuclear macrophage system and delayed hypersensitivity reactions.
3. Clinical reports:
(1) Acute mastitis: 50 g of Fructus Kochiae Scopariae decocted with water, with added brown sugar, taken hot to induce mild sweating. In 33 cases, symptoms were relieved after 2 doses, cured after 4 doses, with some cured after 6 doses. [Shandong Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1985, (4):40]
(2) Urticaria: 50–100 g decocted twice, combined decoction concentrated to 400–500 ml, one dose daily. The dregs wrapped in gauze and applied warm to skin lesions, 3 days per course. In 44 cases, 31 markedly effective, 9 improved. [Jilin Medical Journal, 1980, (4):42]
(3) Flat warts: 150 g Fructus Kochiae Scopariae decocted with 1000 ml water to 300 ml, filtered; 50 g Bai Fan dissolved in the decoction and reserved. Applied topically 3–6 times daily. In 27 cases, satisfactory results obtained. [New Chinese Medicine, 1984, (1):13]
