[Overview] This herb is also known as Immortal Sitting Grass, Centipede Grass, Jaundice Grass, and Great Money Grass. It is the whole herb of Lysimachia christinae Hance, a plant of the Primulaceae family. It is mainly produced in Sichuan and provinces along the Yangtze River basin. Harvested in summer and autumn by cutting the above-ground parts, then washed, sun-dried or dried with heat.
[Properties] Taste: sweet, slightly salty; nature: slightly cold. Enters the Liver, Gallbladder, Kidney, and Bladder meridians.
[Actions] Clears heat and promotes urination to remove dampness, facilitates urination to expel stones, detoxifies and reduces swelling.
[Applications]
1. Used for damp-heat jaundice, often combined with Yin Chen (Artemisia capillaris), Shan Zhi (Gardenia), Da Huang (Rheum), Yu Jin (Curcuma), Hu Zhang (Polygonum cuspidatum), etc. Currently commonly used clinically for infectious jaundice hepatitis and jaundice caused by hepatobiliary stones obstruction.
2. Used for hot stranguria, sandy stranguria, stone stranguria, and hepatobiliary stones. For hot stranguria with painful, difficult urination, often combined with Che Qian Zi (Plantago seed), Hua Shi (Talc) and others; for sandy and stone stranguria, can be used alone in large doses as a decoction or tea, or combined with Hai Jin Sha (Lygodium spore), Dong Kui Zi (Malva seed), Shi Wei (Pyrrosia leaf), etc. Currently used for stones in the kidney, ureter, and bladder meridians. This herb is also effective for hepatobiliary stones, often combined clinically with Yu Jin (Curcuma), Ji Nei Jin (Chicken gizzard lining), Hu Zhang (Polygonum cuspidatum), etc.
3. Used for hot toxic sores and ulcers, erysipelas, parotitis, and poisonous snake bites. Can be used both internally and externally. For severe heat toxicity, it can be combined with Pu Gong Ying (Taraxacum), Jin Yin Hua (Lonicera), Ye Ju Hua (Wild chrysanthemum) for decoction.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 15–30 g; fresh herb dosage doubled; or crushed to extract juice for drinking. External use: appropriate amount, crushed and applied topically or decoction used for washing.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The whole herb of Lysimachia contains acidic components, sterols, flavonoids, glycosides, water-soluble amino acids, tannins, volatile oils, choline, and potassium salts.
2. Pharmacological actions: Herb Lysimachiae has choleretic and litholytic effects, promotes intracellular bile secretion, and enhances relaxation of the biliary sphincter, facilitating the discharge of hepatobiliary stones; its decoction can increase pressure in the upper ureteral lumen, enhance ureteral peristalsis, and increase urine output, exerting compression and flushing effects on ureteral stones to promote their expulsion; the herb and its total flavonoids have anti-inflammatory effects; it inhibits both cellular and humoral immunity; it relaxes vascular smooth muscle and inhibits ADP- and arachidonic acid-induced human platelet aggregation in vitro.
3. Clinical reports:
1) Urinary tract stones: Herb Lysimachiae and Hai Jin Sha each 20–30 g, Shi Wei 15–20 g, decocted in water, one dose daily for 3 to 132 days, average 21 days. Among 72 cases treated, 46 cured, 16 effective, 10 ineffective. [Zhejiang Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1984, 11(9):345]
2) Non-bacterial biliary tract infection: Herb Lysimachiae 30 g daily (20 g for patients without low fever but obvious symptoms, 10 g for those without low fever and mild symptoms), soaked in boiling water, taken on an empty stomach in the morning or freely throughout the day. 52 cases treated: 5 markedly improved, 25 improved, 10 alleviated, 12 ineffective. [Beijing Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1985,(1):26]
3) Keloids: Herb Lysimachiae 300 g, Zi Cao (Lithospermum) 2 g, decocted into a concentrated liquid. Applied by direct current cathode iontophoresis using appropriately sized electrodes soaked in the solution and placed on the lesion. Treatment current: adults 0.05–0.2 mA/cm2, children 0.02–0.05 mA/cm2, once daily for 20 minutes each time, 30 treatments per course. 46 cases treated with 93.5% effectiveness. 4) Infant hepatitis syndrome: Herb Lysimachiae 30–60 g, decocted to 100 ml, taken orally twice daily, combined with Gan Tai Le 0.1 g and vitamins C 0.1 g, B1 0.01 g, three times daily. Antibiotics added if infection present. 41 cases treated: 38 cured (92.7%), 3 ineffective. [Journal of Clinical Pediatrics, 1987,(5):300]
