[Overview] This herb is also known as Huangtoucao, Dahuangcao, and Huangshicao. It is the whole plant of Abrus cantoniensis Hance, a leguminous plant found mainly in Guangdong and Guangxi provinces. It can be harvested year-round; the entire plant is collected, with the pods (which are toxic) and impurities removed, then dried.
[Properties] Taste: sweet, slightly bitter; nature: cool. Enters the liver and stomach meridians.
[Actions] Clears heat and promotes urination, soothes the liver and relieves pain.
[Applications]
1. Used for damp-heat jaundice and stranguria. For jaundice due to damp-heat in the liver and gallbladder, it can be decocted alone or combined with Tianjihuang (Gentianae Radix et Rhizoma), Plantago (Cheqian Cao), Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), and others; for damp-heat in the bladder causing painful, inhibited urination, it can be combined with Yexiazhu (Lysimachiae Herba) and Haijinsha (Lygodii Spora).
2. Used for stomach pain, hypochondriac pain, and joint pain; can be combined with Liangmianzhen (Dichroa febrifuga) and Jiubiying (Lysimachiae Herba).
3. Used externally for traumatic bruises and mastitis; can be pounded and applied topically.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 15–30 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and applied.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The crude saponin hydrolysate of the whole plant contains various triterpenoid saponin aglycones, including Abrus saponins A, B, C, D, E, F, G; soyasapogenols A and B; puerarin saponin A; diols from Sophora flower; triols from Abrus cantoniensis; glycyrrhetinic acid; and glycyrrhizolide. It also contains Abrus saponins, choline, and abrin alkaloids.
2. Pharmacological effects: Decoction of the root of Herba Abrus significantly enhances the contraction amplitude of isolated ileum from normal rabbits. In anesthetized rabbits, oral or intramuscular administration of the decoction increases intestinal tension and slightly enhances peristalsis. Oral administration of the root decoction significantly improves swimming endurance in mice. Crude saponins from Herba Abrus show significant protective effects against carbon tetrachloride-induced liver injury.
