[Overview] This herb is also known as Jiangzhenxiang, Zitongxiang, and Hualimu. It is the heartwood from the trunk and roots of Dalbergia odorifera T.Chen, a leguminous plant. It is mainly produced in Hainan, Guangdong, Yunnan, and Guangxi provinces. It can be harvested year-round by cutting the trunk or digging out the roots, removing the bark and sapwood, sawing into sections, and drying in the sun.

[Properties] Pungent in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Liver, Spleen, and Heart meridians.

[Actions] Promotes qi circulation and activates blood, relieves pain, stops bleeding.

[Applications]
1. Used for various painful syndromes caused by qi stagnation and blood stasis. For example, stabbing pain in the chest and hypochondrium, often combined with turmeric (Yujin), red peony root (Chishao), Ligusticum chuanxiong (Chuanxiong), and safflower (Honghua); currently commonly used to treat coronary heart disease angina pectoris. For epigastric pain, often combined with Typhae Pollen (Puhuang) and Trogopterus Dung (Wulingzhi). For cold hernia pain, can be combined with Melia Toosendan (Chuanlianzi), Lindera Root (Wuyao), and Fennel (Xiaohuixiang). For abdominal pain and vomiting due to turbid stagnation, can be combined with Agastache (Huoxiang) and Aucklandia Root (Muxiang). For traumatic swelling and pain, often combined with frankincense (Ruxiang) and myrrh (Moyao).
2. Used for bleeding syndromes, especially internal and external bleeding caused by trauma. For example, for bleeding from knife wounds, the herb can be ground into powder and applied externally; for traumatic hematemesis, it can be combined with myrrh (Moyao) and Halloysitum Rubrum (Huaruishi) ground into fine powder and taken with yellow wine.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 9–15 g; powder, 1–2 g swallowed; or included in pills and powders. When used in decoctions, add near the end of boiling. External use: appropriate amount of powder applied topically.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of yin deficiency with fire excess and reckless movement of hot blood.

Chemical constituents: The heartwood of the root contains isoflavones such as dalbergin and bodinquinone; chalcone-type compounds including isoliquiritigenin and methyl isoliquiritigenin; isoflavan compounds such as (3R)-formononetin and 5-methoxyformononetin; isoflavanones including (3R)-2′,3′,7-trihydroxy-4′-methoxyisoflavanone; also contains diprenylated isoflavonoids and dalbergia sesquiterpenes.
2. Pharmacological effects: Dalbergia odorifera significantly reduces whole blood viscosity in animals with hyperviscous blood induced by high molecular weight dextran injection, consistent with its traditional use to activate blood circulation and remove blood stasis; it has lipid-lowering effects related to inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase; it significantly promotes recovery of blood flow in experimental mesenteric microcirculation disorders in mice, including recovery after microarterial contraction and local microcirculation restoration; the coronary heart disease formula Coronary II, which uses Dalbergia odorifera as the main herb, has antihypertensive effects, with Dalbergia odorifera acting by inhibiting angiotensin II receptors; ethanol extracts significantly reduce spontaneous activity in mice and prolong pentobarbital-induced sleep time; decoctions administered orally significantly inhibit the incidence of electrically induced convulsions in mice.
