[Overview] This herb is also known as Litchi Seed, Liren, Dali Seed, and Zhike. It is the mature seed of the Sapindaceae family plant Litchi chinensis Sonn. It is mainly produced in Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, as well as Taiwan and Sichuan. The fruit is harvested when ripe in summer; the pericarp and fleshy aril are removed, then the seeds are washed and sun-dried.
[Properties] Taste is sweet and slightly bitter; nature is warm. Enters the Liver, Kidney, and Stomach meridians.
[Actions] Promotes qi circulation and disperses masses, expels cold and relieves pain.
[Applications]
1. Used for hernia and abdominal pain due to cold stagnation of qi, and testicular swelling and pain; often combined with Citrus Seed (Juhé), Fennel (Xiaohuixiang), Lindera (Wuyao), Evodia (Wuzhuyu), and others. For testicular swelling and pain caused by damp-heat descending in the Liver meridian, Semen Litchi can also be used but should be combined with Gentiana (Longdancao), Phellodendron (Huangbai), Rhubarb (Dahuang), and Toosendan (Chuanlianzi).
2. Used for epigastric pain due to Liver qi stagnation; often combined with Aucklandia (Muxiang), as in the formula Lixiang San (荔香散).
3. Used for dysmenorrhea due to blood stasis and postpartum abdominal pain; often combined with Angelica (Danggui), Cyperus (Xiangfu), and others. Clinically, Semen Litchi has been used to treat diabetes with certain efficacy.
[Dosage and Administration] Oral administration: decoction, 4.5–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The seeds contain saponins, tannins, and α-methylene cyclopropylglycine, as well as a small amount of volatile oil. The oil contains 3-hydroxy-2-butanone, cis-sabinene, β-ocimene, α-curcumene, δ-elemene, acorusene, isoquinoline alcohol, palmitic acid, and others.
2. Pharmacological effects: The aqueous solution of Semen Litchi dry extract shows significant hypoglycemic effects in alloxan-induced diabetic rats; the seed oil has lipid-regulating and antioxidant effects, reducing total cholesterol (TC) and triglycerides (TG) in animal serum; the water extract inhibits hepatitis B virus surface antigen.
3. Clinical reports: For diabetes, oral administration of Lijiang Hypoglycemic Tablets made from Semen Litchi, 4 tablets per dose (some patients 8 tablets), three times daily for 3 months as one course of treatment, was given to 45 patients. Results showed marked effect in 8 cases, effective in 28 cases, ineffective in 9 cases, with a total effective rate of 80%.
