[Overview] This herb is also known as Suopozi, Suluozi, Suoluozhi, and Kaxinguo. It is the mature seed of plants from the Sapindaceae family: Aesculus chinensis Bge, Aesculus chinensis Bge var. chekiangensis (Hu et Fang), or Aesculus wilsonii Rehd. The seeds of Aesculus chinensis are mainly produced in Shaanxi and Henan provinces, with Zhejiang and Jiangsu also producing; seeds of Zhejiang Aesculus chinensis are mainly from southern Jiangsu and northern Zhejiang; seeds of Aesculus wilsonii are mainly from Sichuan, Hubei, and Guizhou. The fruit is harvested in autumn when mature, sun-dried for 7–8 days, then further dried over low heat until fully dry; alternatively, it can be directly sun-dried or peeled and then sun-dried.
[Properties] Sweet in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Liver and Stomach meridians.
[Actions] Regulates Qi and relaxes the middle burner, harmonizes the stomach and relieves pain.
[Applications] Used for epigastric pain and chest and hypochondriac distension due to Liver and Stomach Qi stagnation, and premenstrual breast distension pain. For stomach cold with Qi stagnation pain, it can be combined with Evodia rutaecarpa (Wuzhuyu) and Dried Ginger (Ganjiang); for Liver Qi stagnation with hypochondriac distension and pain, it can be combined with Cyperus rotundus (Xiangfu), Citrus reticulata green peel (Qingpi), Citrus aurantium (Zhike), and Bupleurum (Chaihu); for women with Liver Qi stagnation and premenstrual breast distension pain, it is often combined with Angelica sinensis (Danggui), Ligusticum chuanxiong (Chuanxiong), Cyperus rotundus (Xiangfu), and Piper wallichii (Lulutong).
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decocted in water, 5–10 g; or burned to ash and taken with wine.
[Cautions] Use with caution in patients with Qi and Yin deficiency.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents include fatty oils, mainly oleic acid, glyceryl tristearate, and Aesculus saponins.
2. Pharmacology: Saponins from Semen Aesculi exhibit significant anti-inflammatory effects; alcohol extract powder mixed in feed can significantly reduce serum cholesterol in hyperlipidemic animal models.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Cerebral edema: Semen Aesculi saponins 6–18 g added to 50 ml of 10% glucose solution, administered by intravenous drip twice daily for 5–7 days (up to 10 days in some cases), children treated for 3–4 days. In 45 cases of cerebral edema after brain trauma or surgery, results showed 19 cases markedly effective, 22 effective, 4 ineffective, with a total effective rate of 91%. Results showed marked effectiveness in 10 and 7 cases, improvement in 9 and 5 cases, and ineffectiveness in 3 and 8 cases respectively, with total effective rates of 93.86% and 75.80%.
