[Overview] This herb is also known as Suya, Niemi, and Su Nie. It is the mature fruit of the Poaceae family plant Setaria italica (L.) Beauv., which has been germinated. It is widely cultivated throughout China. The millet grains are soaked in water, then kept under suitable temperature and humidity conditions until the rootlets grow to about 6 mm in length, after which they are sun-dried or low-temperature dried.

[Properties] Sweet in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the Spleen and Stomach meridians.

[Actions] Promotes digestion and harmonizes the middle burner; strengthens the spleen and stimulates the appetite.

[Applications] Used for food retention and accumulation, epigastric and abdominal fullness, lack of hunger, and dislike of food. Commonly combined with Maiya (Barley Sprout), Shan Zha (Hawthorn), and Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven). For spleen and stomach deficiency with impaired transportation and transformation, reduced appetite, and undigested grains, it can be combined with Bai Zhu (Atractylodes), Sha Ren (Amomum), and Gan Cao (Licorice), as in the formula Gu Shen Wan (谷神丸). For dual qi and yin deficiency after febrile disease, with dry mouth, red tongue, no hunger, and wasting-thirst, it can be combined with Shi Hu (Dendrobium), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon), Shan Yao (Dioscorea), and Pei Lan (Eupatorium).

Additionally, this herb can be used externally to treat burns and scalds.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoct 9–15 g; or grind into powder. Stir-fried Guya is more focused on promoting digestion and is used for lack of hunger and digestion; charred Guya is better at resolving food retention and is used for undigested food accumulation.

[Modern Research] Chemical constituents include starch, protein, cellulose, and pentosan. The ethanol extract contains xylose, fructose, glucose, sucrose, maltose, raffinose, maltotriose, and higher oligosaccharides. The water-soluble fraction mainly contains arabinose, xylose, and small amounts of mannose, galactose, and glucose.
