[Overview] This product is also known as haw oil or tea seed oil. It is the fatty oil extracted from the seeds of Camellia oleifera Abel, a plant of the Theaceae family. It is mainly produced in Fujian and other regions. Seeds are harvested when mature in autumn, and oil is obtained by pressing.
[Properties] Taste is sweet and bitter; nature is cool. Enters the Large Intestine and Stomach meridians.
[Actions] Moistens the intestines and expels parasites; clears heat and detoxifies.
[Applications]
1. Used for sha qi abdominal pain, intestinal dryness with constipation, abdominal pain due to roundworms, and intestinal obstruction; can be taken with cold boiled water.
2. Used externally for scabies, tinea, and burns; can be applied directly. For burns, it can be combined with Baicao Cream (百草霜) and duck egg white to rub on affected areas.
The Pharmacopoeia of the People’s Republic of China records the use of camellia oil as a raw material for injection-grade camellia oil and as an ointment base.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: taken with cold boiled water, 30–60 g. External use: apply an appropriate amount topically.
[Cautions] Use with caution in individuals with spleen deficiency and loose stools.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The oil contains triterpene glycosides. Hydrolysis of camellia saponins yields camelliasaponin A, tea saponin A and B, D-glucuronic acid, D-glucose, D-galactose, D-myo-inositol, angelic acid, crotonic acid, and α-methylbutyric acid.
2. Pharmacological effects: Crude camellia saponins significantly reduce cholesterol levels, inhibit sperm motility in rats and humans, and exhibit certain antifungal effects.
3. Clinical reports: For acute roundworm intestinal obstruction, oral camellia oil dosage is 5–8 ml for ages 1–2 years, 9–15 ml for ages 3–4 years, and 16–20 ml for ages 5–6 years. Atropine sulfate injection 0.1–0.3 mg is administered before dosing. Two hours after camellia oil administration, antiparasitic drugs can be given orally at pediatric doses. In a total of 60 cases treated, 45 showed marked effect, 12 improved, and 3 were ineffective. [Chinese Rural Medicine, 1987, (2):26]
