[Overview] This herb is also known as Huaishi, Huaizi, Huaijia, Huaidou. It is the fruit of the Fabaceae plant Sophora japonica L. It is produced throughout China. The fruit is harvested in winter when mature, sun-dried thoroughly, with the peduncle and impurities removed, or briefly blanched in boiling water before drying fully.

[Properties] Bitter in taste, cold in nature. Enters the Liver and Large Intestine meridians.

[Actions] Cools the blood and stops bleeding; clears the Liver and brightens the eyes.

[Applications]
1. Used for bleeding hemorrhoids, bloody dysentery, metrorrhagia, hematuria, hematemesis due to blood heat, especially bleeding from the lower body. For treating bleeding hemorrhoids, it can be combined with Di Yu (Sanguisorba), Huang Qin (Scutellaria), Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis), Zhi Qiao (Aurantii Fructus) in formulas such as Huaijiao Wan (槐角丸). For bloody dysentery, it can be combined with Huang Lian (Coptis) and Ejiao (Donkey-hide gelatin). For metrorrhagia and menorrhagia, it is often combined with charcoal of Qiancao (Rubia) and Guanzhong (Dryopteris). For hematuria and urinary tract bleeding, it is commonly combined with Che Qian Cao (Plantago) and Mu Tong (Akebia).
2. Used for Liver heat rising upward causing red, swollen, painful eyes, dizziness, and vertigo; often combined with Ju Hua (Chrysanthemum), Xiakucao (Prunella), Huang Qin (Scutellaria).
Additionally, externally applied Huaijiao can treat damp itching of the vulva and burns from water or fire.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders; juice from tender fruits can be used. External use: appropriate amount, decocted for washing; or powdered and mixed; or applied with oil.

[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of Spleen and Stomach deficiency cold, poor appetite, loose stools, and during pregnancy.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents mainly include flavonoids such as sophoricoside, sophorotrioside, sophoricoside 7-β-D-cellobioside, sophoricoside 7-diglucosyl rhamnoside, kaempferol, kaempferol 3-O-rhamnosyl diglucoside, kaempferol 3,7-O-glucoside, quercetin, rutin, sophoricoside glycosides, sophoricoside diglycosides, and sophoricoside flavonoids. It also contains triterpenoids and various amino acids. The seeds contain alkaloids such as cytisine, N-methylcytisine, sophocarpine, matrine, and leucomidine. It also contains galactomannan polysaccharides, phospholipids, calcium-magnesium phytate, and plant lectins.
2. Pharmacological effects: Huaijiao exhibits inhibitory effects in vitro against Staphylococcus and Escherichia coli; rutin inhibits herpes simplex virus. Huaijiao extracts have positive inotropic effects on the heart, enhancing myocardial contractility; aqueous extracts increase blood glucose in mice; rutin and sophoricoside significantly inhibit inflammation induced by implanted wool pellets in rats; rutin significantly reduces malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in mouse plasma and increases superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in rat plasma with a dose-effect relationship; Huaijiao aqueous extracts reduce serum cholesterol in mice, related to its flavonoid content; rutin maintains vascular resistance, reduces permeability, and decreases fragility.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Chronic pharyngitis: take about 15 g of mature dried Huaijiao with skin, roast gently until light yellow, soak with green tea or rock sugar and drink. Each dose 500 ml, 1–2 times daily. In 175 cases treated, all recovered within 2–4 days. [Chinese Folk Therapy, 1997,(6):28] 2) Hemorrhoids: 250 g Huaijiao fried until yellow, ground into fine powder, mixed with 200 ml white honey boiled gently to form Huaijiao honey paste.
