[Overview] This herb is also known as Dragon Head Grass, Golden Top Dragon Bud, Knife Edge Herb, and Wolf Tooth Grass. It is the aerial part of Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb., a plant of the Rosaceae family. It is found throughout China, mainly produced in Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Hunan, and Hubei provinces. Harvested in summer and autumn when stems and leaves are lush, impurities are removed, cut into sections, and sun-dried.
[Properties] Bitter and astringent in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the Lung, Liver, and Spleen meridians.
[Actions] Astringes to stop bleeding, stops dysentery, tonifies deficiency, and kills parasites.
[Applications]
1. Used for various bleeding syndromes regardless of cold, heat, deficiency, or excess causes. For bleeding due to reckless blood heat, it can be combined with Rehmanniae Radix (Sheng Di Huang), Moutan Cortex (Mu Dan Pi), and Biota Leaf (Ce Bai Ye). For bleeding due to deficiency cold, it can be combined with Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin), processed ginger, mugwort leaf, and Codonopsis (Dang Shen).
2. Used for diarrhea and dysentery, especially suitable for bloody dysentery or chronic diarrhea and dysentery. For bloody dysentery, it can be combined with Sanguisorba (Di Yu) and Amaranth (Tie Xian Cai); for chronic diarrhea and dysentery, used alone or combined with Hibiscus flower (Mu Jin Hua).
3. Used for fatigue and labor-induced exhaustion with symptoms of weakness, tiredness, and sallow complexion, often decocted with jujube (Da Zao). For qi and blood deficiency with fatigue, dizziness, and blurred vision, it can be combined with Astragalus (Huang Qi), Codonopsis (Dang Shen), Angelica (Dang Gui), and Rehmannia (Shu Di).
4. Used for malaria and trichomonas vaginitis. For malaria chills and fever, the herb powder can be taken 2 hours before malaria onset or decocted for oral administration; for trichomonas vaginitis with vaginal itching and leukorrhea, a concentrated decoction of the single herb can be used to rinse the vagina.
Additionally, this herb can be used for sores, boils, abscesses, and psoriasis, either taken orally or applied topically as a poultice.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6–12 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, pounded and applied topically; or boiled into a paste and applied.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The whole herb contains agrimoniaphenol, luteolin-7-glucoside, apigenin-7-glucoside, quercetin, gallic acid derivatives, caffeic acid, gallic acid, rutin, kaempferol-7-rhamnoside, as well as tannins, sterols, saponins, and volatile oils. An anticancer active component, agrimoniin, has been isolated from the tannins.
2. Pharmacological effects: Agrimonia Herb has anticoagulant effects, inhibits platelet aggregation, and prevents thrombosis; it inhibits human cervical cancer (JTC 26) and mouse sarcoma S180 with inhibition rates over 90% and 25–50%, respectively; agrimoniaphenol shows direct lethal effects on pork tapeworm cysticerci, larvae, Mo’s tapeworm, and short membrane tapeworm; decoctions of young stems and leaves have good trichomonacidal effects; hot water or ethanol extracts inhibit Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shigella flexneri, and Salmonella typhi in vitro; also exhibits anti-inflammatory and lipid-lowering effects.
3. Clinical reports: 1) Upper gastrointestinal bleeding: 30 g Agrimonia Herb, 10 jujubes, 6 g Bletilla powder (swallowed), decocted once daily. Treated 100 cases with an effective rate of 70%. [Shanghai Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1979,(4):28] 2) Meniere’s syndrome: 60 g Agrimonia Herb decocted once daily. Treated 4 cases, all cured within 1–4 days; one case followed up for 3 months, another for 6 years with no relapse. [Intermediate Medical Journal, 1981,(9):29] 3) Diabetes: 60 g Agrimonia Herb decocted once daily. Treated 10 cases with marked effect. [Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1992,(7):11] 4) Psoriasis: 30 g each of Agrimonia Herb and Cynanchum stauntonii (Xu Chang Qing), 10 g licorice, decocted. Treated 17 cases, 13 cured, 4 markedly effective. [Shandong Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1994,(3):138]
