[Overview] This herb is also known as Baodingxiang and Huangjiang. It is the rhizome of Curcuma Longa L., a plant of the Zingiberaceae family. It is mainly produced in Sichuan, Fujian, and Jiangxi provinces, with additional production in Guangxi, Hubei, Shaanxi, Taiwan, and Yunnan. It is harvested in winter when the stems and leaves wither, then cleaned, boiled or steamed until fully penetrated, sun-dried, and the fibrous roots removed.
[Properties] Bitter and pungent in taste, warm in nature. Enters the Liver meridian.
[Actions] Breaks blood stasis and moves qi, unblocks menstruation and relieves pain.
[Applications]
1. Used for epigastric and abdominal pain due to qi stagnation and blood stasis, abdominal masses, dysmenorrhea and amenorrhea, traumatic injuries. For pain in the hypochondriac and epigastric regions caused by Liver qi stagnation, it can be combined with Zhike (Fructus Aurantii) and Guixin (Cinnamomi Cortex); for epigastric and abdominal pain, it can be combined with Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae), Wuyao (Linderae Radix), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), as in formulas such as Jianghuang San and Tuiqi San; for female amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea, it is combined with Danggui, Chishao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong); for postpartum abdominal pain due to blood stasis, it is combined with Moyao (Myrrha) and Ruxiang (Olibanum); for traumatic injuries, it is often combined with Sanqi (Radix Notoginseng), Niuxi (Radix Cyathulae), and Danggui.
2. Used for wind-damp bi syndrome and shoulder and arm pain, often combined with Qianghuo (Rhizoma et Radix Notopterygii), Danggui, and Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba).
3. Used externally for early-stage carbuncles and furuncles with redness, swelling, heat, and pain, often combined with Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae), Tianhuafen (Radix Trichosanthis), Nanxing (Rhizoma Arisaematis), and Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri), ground into powder and applied externally, as in the formula Ruyi Jinhang San. Additionally, it can treat gum pain when combined with Baizhi and Xixin (Radix et Rhizoma Asari), ground into powder for external use.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, ground into powder and applied as a paste.
[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of blood deficiency without qi stagnation or blood stasis, and in pregnancy.
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents mainly include volatile oils of turmeric, with principal components such as turmerone, curlone, ar-turmerone, cineole, borneol, and dehydrocurdione. It also contains curcumin, arabinose, fructose, glucose, fixed oils, starch, and oxalates.
2. Pharmacological effects: various dry extracts of turmeric exhibit anti-inflammatory effects; sodium curcumin increases bile secretion and has a significant choleretic effect; ethanol extracts of turmeric rhizome significantly inhibit elevated serum ALT and AST induced by carbon tetrachloride; curcumin and volatile oils have antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus and varying inhibitory effects on skin fungi; curcumin extracts, volatile oils, and curcumin significantly reduce serum cholesterol, triglycerides, and beta-lipoproteins. Additionally, turmeric shows anti-ulcer, anti-fertility, and anti-tumor effects.
3. Clinical reports: Chronic lumbar muscle strain—using 1 kg of turmeric, crushed into coarse powder, then made into 64 g of extract; 2 g applied to the Weizhong acupoint on both lower limbs, removed after 6 hours. A total of 30 cases were treated, with 28 cured (93.33%), 2 improved (6.67%), total effective rate 100%. [Modern Rehabilitation, 2001, 5(11):120]
