[Overview] This product is also known as Bai Jiaoxiang, Jiaoxiang, Baijiao, Fengzhi. It is the resin of Liquidambar formosana Hance, a plant of the Hamamelidaceae family. The tree trunk is cut and split between July and August to allow the resin to flow out. The flowing resin is collected from October to April of the following year and then dried by sun exposure or naturally.

[Properties] Pungent and bitter in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the spleen, lung, and liver meridians.

[Actions] Activates blood circulation and detoxifies, astringes and consolidates, dispels wind and unblocks the channels.

[Applications]
1. Used for traumatic injuries, fractures, external bleeding, carbuncles on the back, scrofula and phlegm nodules, skin itching and rashes. Often prepared as pills, powders, ointments, or elixirs for internal or external use. For treating carbuncles and all types of ulcerated sores with unbearable pain on the back, it can be combined with frankincense and myrrh to make pills for internal use, such as Ruxiang Wan (Frankincense Pill); for treating traumatic tendon rupture, it can be used alone as a powder externally; for fractures, it can be combined with frankincense and asphalt to make plasters for external use; for leukorrhea, phlegm nodules, scrofula, breast cancer, transverse paralysis, and osteomyelitis, it can be combined with Cao Wu, Dilong, Mubeizi, musk, etc., as in Xiao Jin Dan; for itching rashes, it can be combined with rhubarb, Chuanxiong, Kushen, Shechuangzi, etc., boiled in water for external washing, as in Fengxiang Tang.
2. Used for middle burner deficiency cold with inability to consolidate leading to chronic diarrhea and bleeding. For spleen deficiency with loose stools and prolonged diarrhea with abdominal pain around the navel, it can be combined with poppy shell, Longgu (dragon bone), licorice, and dried ginger; for vomiting blood and coughing blood, it can be combined with cotton ash powder for oral administration; for persistent nosebleeds, it can be combined with clam shell powder and ginger juice for oral administration.
3. Used for painful obstruction syndrome, paralysis, and hemiplegia. For wind-damp painful obstruction with radiating pain, it can be combined with Cao Wu, activated frankincense, Angelica sinensis, or Weilingxian, as in Ruxiang Moyao Wan and Yi Li Jin Dan; for post-stroke hemiplegia sequelae, it can be combined with Rehmannia, Nanxing, Cao Wu, etc.; for liver and kidney deficiency with wind-dampness and blood stasis in the feet causing difficulty walking, it can be combined with Buguzhi, Gouji, Dilong, etc.

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: powder, 1.5–3 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, often included in pills, powders, ointments, or elixirs.

[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases without blood stasis internally; use with caution during menstruation and pregnancy.
