[Overview] This herb is also known as Bamboo Leaf Baiqian, Grass Baiqian, and Cough Medicine. It is the rhizome and root of plants from the Asclepiadaceae family: Cynanchum stauntonii (Decne.) Schltr. ex Levl. (Willow Leaf Baiqian) or Cynanchum glaucescens (Decne.) Hand.-Mazz. (Yuanhua Leaf Baiqian). It is mainly produced in Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangsu, Fujian, Hubei, Jiangxi, and Hunan provinces. The whole plant is harvested in autumn; the roots and rhizomes are separated, washed, and dried in the sun or by baking.

[Properties] The taste is pungent and sweet; the nature is slightly warm. It enters the Lung meridian.

[Actions] Descends Qi, transforms phlegm, and stops cough.

[Applications] Used for excessive phlegm obstructing the lungs, cough, and asthma, regardless of cold or heat pattern, external or internal causes, acute or chronic cough and asthma. For cough and asthma with heat signs, it is combined with Sangbaipi (Morus Bark), Digupi (Lycii Cortex), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), etc. For cold pattern, it is combined with Ziwan (Aster Root), Kuandonghua (Coltsfoot Flower), Banxia (Pinellia Rhizome), etc. For treating wind-cold induced cough with difficult expectoration, it is combined with Jingjie (Schizonepeta), Jiegeng, Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), as in the formula Zhike San. For cough and asthma with phlegm and edema, wheezing with phlegm in the throat, and inability to lie flat, it is combined with Ziwan, Banxia, Daji (Euphorbia), etc. For lung heat cough and asthma, it is combined with Sangbaipi and Tinglizi (Descurainia Seed). For lung deficiency cough with shortness of breath and weakness, it is combined with qi-tonifying and asthma-relieving herbs such as Huangqi (Astragalus), Shashen (Glehnia Root), Kuandonghua, and Ziwan.

Additionally, this herb has stomach-strengthening and Qi-regulating effects. When combined with Qi-regulating, pain-relieving, and digestion-promoting herbs, it can treat stomach pain and pediatric malnutrition (Ganji).

1. Chemical constituents: The rhizome of Cynanchum stauntonii contains β-sitosterol, long-chain fatty acids, and North China Baiqian alcohol; the root of Cynanchum glaucescens contains baiqian saponins, baiqian sapogenins, baiqian sapogenin C, D, nerium glycosides, new baiqian saponins, and baiqian disaccharides.

Pharmacological effects: Cynanchum glaucescens has antitussive effects; its aqueous extract shows significant expectorant activity and markedly prevents asthma induced by acetylcholine and histamine mixture, with very significant anti-inflammatory effects.
