[Overview] This herb is also known as Chuan Bei, Jing Chuan Bei, or Bei Mu. It is the bulb of plants from the Liliaceae family: Fritillaria cirrhosa D.Don, Fritillaria unibracteata Hsiao et K.C.Hsia, Fritillaria przewalskii Maxim., or Fritillaria delavayi Franch. It is mainly produced in Sichuan, Yunnan, and Gansu provinces. The first three species are commonly called “Song Bei” and “Qing Bei” based on their characteristics, while the latter is called “Lu Bei.” The bulbs are harvested in summer and autumn or when snow melts, with roots, coarse skin, and dirt removed, then sun-dried or dried at low temperature.
[Properties] Taste: bitter and sweet; nature: slightly cold. Channels entered: Lung and Heart.
[Actions] Clears heat and moistens the lungs, transforms phlegm and stops cough, relieves constraint and dissipates nodules.
[Applications]
1. Used for cough. For yin deficiency with lung dryness and chronic cough due to deficiency, often combined with Radix Adenophorae (Sha Shen), Ophiopogon japonicus (Mai Dong), and Rehmannia glutinosa (Sheng Di Huang). For dry cough due to dryness-heat with scanty sputum, often combined with Anemarrhena asphodeloides (Zhi Mu), as in the formula Er Mu San (Two Fritillaria Powder). For lung heat cough with phlegm-heat accumulation and thick yellow sticky sputum, combined with Zhi Mu, Gypsum Fibrosum (Shi Gao), Scutellaria baicalensis (Huang Qin), Morus alba root bark (Sang Bai Pi), and Trichosanthes fruit (Gua Lou). For lung abscess with purulent sputum, often combined with Houttuynia cordata (Yu Xing Cao), fresh reed rhizome (Lu Gen), and Coix lacryma-jobi (Yi Yi Ren).
2. Used for stroke, epilepsy, and pediatric convulsions. For stroke with closed syndrome and heat-phlegm disturbing the clear orifices causing coma, often combined with bamboo sap (Zhu Li) and Acorus gramineus (Shi Chang Pu). For epilepsy and pediatric convulsions with internal heat-phlegm, combined with Ziziphus jujuba seed (Hou Zao) and Bambusa tuldoides (Tian Zhu Huang).
3. Used for constraint syndrome with chest oppression and epigastric distention, combined with Magnolia officinalis (Hou Po) and Curcuma aromatica (Yu Jin).
4. Used for scrofula, abscesses, and mastitis. For scrofula, often combined with Scrophularia ningpoensis (Xuan Shen) and Ostreae Concha (Mu Li). For abscesses and mastitis, often combined with Taraxacum mongolicum (Pu Gong Ying) and Forsythia suspensa (Lian Qiao).
Additionally, Bulb of Fritillaria cirrhosa can be used for insufficient lactation, often ground with Zhi Mu and Mu Li for oral administration.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–9 g; powder, 1–2 g; or included in pills. External use: appropriate amount, powdered and sprinkled.
[Cautions] Use with caution in cases of spleen and stomach deficiency cold, cold phlegm, and damp phlegm. Contraindicated with Aconitum (Fu Zi).
[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents include various alkaloids such as chuanbeinone, chuanbeinone A, chuanbeinine, fritillarin, delavayine alkaloids, chuanbeinone ketone alkaloids, and others.
2. Pharmacological effects: Bulb of Fritillaria cirrhosa and its alkaloids have significant expectorant, antitussive, antiasthmatic, and antihypertensive effects; it also shows notable antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli and inhibits the growth of astrocyte-like Nocardia.
3. Clinical reports: (1) Liver cirrhosis: Using Bulb of Fritillaria cirrhosa with processed Euphorbia kansui powder and jujube for administration or cough-stopping capsules, treating 36 cases with a total effective rate of 86.1%. [Liaoning Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1986, (9):29] (2) Prostatic hypertrophy: Using Bulb of Fritillaria cirrhosa, Sophora flavescens, and Codonopsis pilosula 25 g each to make a combined formula, one dose daily. Treated 35 cases with 27 cured and 8 ineffective. [Liaoning Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 1986, (9):29]
