[Overview] This herb is also known as Banbei, Yaobei, Pingbei, and Fengjie Beimu. It is the bulb of the Liliaceae plant Fritillaria hupehensis Hsiao et K.C. Hsia. It is mainly produced in Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan, and other regions. The bulbs are harvested after the plants wither in early summer, then soaked in lime water and sulfur-fumigated; or soaked in clean water and dried.
[Properties] Slightly bitter in taste, cool in nature. Enters the Lung and Heart meridians.
[Actions] Resolves phlegm and stops cough, detoxifies and dissipates nodules.
[Applications]
1. Used for externally contracted wind-heat cough, phlegm-heat cough, with expectoration of thick yellow sputum.
2. Used for scrofula, lung abscess, breast abscess, and swellings.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6–15 g.
[Cautions] Contraindicated with Aconitum (Fuzi).

1. Chemical constituents: The bulb contains fritillarin A, fritillarin B, hupehenrine A, hupehenrine A glycoside, hupehenrine B, hupehenzine, hupehensin, hupehedine, ebei alkaloid, hupehenoside, β-sitosterol, and others.

Pharmacological effects: Total alkaloids of Fritillaria hupehensis inhibit ammonia-induced cough; total saponins significantly increase phenol red excretion in mouse respiratory tract, indicating expectorant effects; total alkaloids relax isolated guinea pig tracheal smooth muscle contracted by histamine phosphate; total alkaloids also have mydriatic effects.
Note: The properties and actions of Fritillaria hupehensis are basically similar to those of Fritillaria cirrhosa (Chuan Beimu), and it is often used as Chuan Beimu in its distribution areas.
