[Overview] This herb is also known as Turen Shen, Fensha Shen, Mingsha Shen, and Chuan Mingshen. It is the root of Changium smyrnioides Wolff, a plant of the Apiaceae family. It is mainly produced in Jiangsu, Anhui, and Zhejiang provinces. The roots are harvested in spring, washed clean of soil, boiled in water until the white core disappears, then taken out, peeled, rinsed several times in clean water, and dried in the sun.
[Properties] Sweet and slightly bitter in taste, slightly cold in nature. Enters the Lung, Stomach, and Liver meridians.
[Actions] Moistens the lungs and transforms phlegm, nourishes yin and harmonizes the stomach, pacifies the liver and detoxifies.
[Applications]
1. Used for lung yin deficiency with dryness, dry cough with little phlegm, sticky phlegm difficult to expectorate, or no phlegm. Commonly combined with Sha Shen (Glehnia root), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon root), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhena rhizome), Bei Mu (Fritillaria bulb), etc. It can also be used for lung heat cough, often combined with Sang Bai Pi (Mulberry root bark) and Pi Pa Ye (Loquat leaf).
2. Used for stomach heat injuring fluids, vomiting, poor appetite, dry mouth and throat. Often combined with Pi Pa Ye (Loquat leaf), Shi Hu (Dendrobium), Mai Dong (Ophiopogon root), etc. Also used for pregnancy-related vomiting, combined with Zhu Ru (Bamboo shavings) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodes rhizome).
3. Used for liver fire rising or liver yang hyperactivity causing red, swollen, painful eyes, headache, and dizziness. To treat liver fire rising with red, swollen painful eyes, it can be combined with Shan Zhi (Gardenia fruit), Dan Pi (Moutan cortex), Xia Ku Cao (Prunella spike), etc.; to treat liver yang hyperactivity causing headache and dizziness, it can be combined with Ju Hua (Chrysanthemum) and Gou Teng (Uncaria). Clinically, it is often used to treat hypertension with certain efficacy.
4. Used for carbuncles, sores, and ulcers, often combined with Jin Yin Hua (Honeysuckle flower) and Pu Gong Ying (Dandelion).
In folk use, this herb is used as a tonic to strengthen the body, often decocted with Xian He Cao (Agrimonia) and Hong Zao (Red dates) to treat dizziness and weakness caused by phlegm and anemia.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decocted in water, 6–12 g, or made into a paste.
[Cautions] Contraindicated in cases of spleen deficiency with diarrhea, spermatorrhea, or miscarriage. Pregnant women should not take this herb.

1. Chemical constituents: Radix Changii contains various free and bound fatty oils, volatile oils, polysaccharides, 20 amino acids, and 18 trace elements beneficial or essential to the human body including calcium, cobalt, copper, chromium, etc.
2. Pharmacological effects: Radix Changii has a bidirectional regulatory effect on the immune system; its ethyl acetate, acetone, and methanol extracts significantly inhibit lipid peroxidation in rat liver homogenate supernatant in vitro; the decoction significantly prolongs survival time under normobaric hypoxia and chemical hypoxia induced by cyanide in animals, showing anti-stress effects; it also lowers serum cholesterol and increases the ratio of high-density lipoprotein to cholesterol in experimental animals.
