[Overview] This herb is also known as Donghua, Kuanhua, Aidonghua, and Jiujuhua. It is the flower bud of Tussilago farfara L., a plant of the Asteraceae family. It is mainly produced in Henan, Gansu, Shanxi, and Shaanxi provinces, with the largest yield from Henan. The flowers from Lingtai in Gansu and Yulin in Shaanxi are of superior quality and are called “Lingtai Winter Medicine Flower.” The flowers are harvested in December or before the ground freezes, when the flowers have not yet emerged from the soil. They are then dried in a ventilated, shaded place. When half-dried, soil is sifted out, flower stalks removed, and then dried completely.

[Properties] The taste is pungent and slightly bitter; the nature is warm. It enters the Lung meridian.

[Actions] Moistens the lungs and descends Qi, transforms phlegm and stops cough.

[Applications] Used for cough and asthma regardless of duration or whether caused by cold or heat; often used together with Ziwan (Radix Asteris).
1. For cough and asthma due to cold fluid obstructing the lungs with a watery rale in the throat, it is commonly combined with Ziwan, Shegan (Rhizoma Belamcandae), and Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae), as in Shegan Mahuang Tang.
2. For lung heat cough and asthma with expectoration of yellow phlegm, it is often combined with Mahuang, Baiguo (Ginkgo), and Sangye (Folium Mori), as in Dingchuan Tang.
3. For lung Qi deficiency with persistent cough and asthma, shortness of breath, and fatigue, it is combined with Renshen (Ginseng), Baizhu (Atractylodes), and Gancao (Licorice).
4. For cough with blood-streaked sputum and red tongue with little coating, it can be combined with Baihe (Bulbus Lilii), as in Baihe Gao.
5. For lung abscess with coughing of pus and blood, it can be combined with Yiyiren (Coix seed) and Jiegeng (Radix Platycodi).

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 5–9 g; or used in pills, powders, or ointments. External use: appropriate amount, ground into powder and applied topically.

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: The flower contains alkaloids such as tussilagone alkaloid and crepidamine; sesquiterpenes including tussilagone, methyl butyrate tussilagone ester, and deacetyl tussilagone; triterpenes such as tussilagol and arnidiol; flavonoid glycosides including rutin and hyperoside. It also contains β-sitosterol and dandelion yellow pigment.
2. Pharmacological effects: Decoction of the flower shows significant antitussive, expectorant, and respiratory stimulant effects. Extracts can bind to rabbit platelet membranes and inhibit platelet activating factor (PAF), significantly suppressing PAF and carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats, acting as a competitive antagonist of PAF receptors. Tussilagone significantly increases peripheral vascular resistance and strongly contracts blood pressure, with effects stronger than dopamine (DA).
3. Clinical reports: Chronic osteomyelitis: an appropriate amount of the flower is chewed into a paste, applied to a sterilized cloth, and then placed on the wound surface. Dressing is changed once daily for 10 days per course. In a total of 51 cases treated, 35 were cured, 12 improved, and 4 ineffective, with an overall effective rate of 92%.
