[Overview] This herb is also known as Hehunpi, Yehepi, and Albizia Wood Bark. It is the bark of Albizia julibrissin Durazz., a leguminous plant. It is mainly produced in Hubei, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, and other regions, with Hubei having the largest output. The bark is peeled in summer and autumn, cut into sections, and dried in the sun or by baking.
[Properties] Sweet in taste, neutral in nature. Enters the Heart, Liver, and Lung meridians.
[Actions] Calms the spirit and relieves depression; activates blood circulation and reduces abscesses.
[Applications]
1. Used for restlessness of the heart and spirit, depression, and insomnia. It can be used alone or combined with Ye Jiaoteng (Caulis Polygoni Multiflori), Baiziren (Semen Biotae), Yujin (Radix Curcumae), and others.
2. Used for lung abscess and sores. For lung abscess with purulent and bloody sputum, it can be decocted alone, as in Huang Shen Hun Tang (黄神昏汤), or combined with Houttuynia cordata, winter melon seed, peach kernel, etc. For chronic lung abscess, it can be decocted with Baimi (Rhizoma Bletillae), as in Hehuan Yin (合欢饮). For abscesses and sores, it can be combined with dandelion and wild chrysanthemum.
3. Used for traumatic injuries with blood stasis and swelling pain; can be combined with frankincense, myrrh, angelica, red peony root, and others.
[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 6–9 g; or incorporated into pills or powders. External use: appropriate amount, ground into powder and applied topically.
[Cautions] Use with caution during pregnancy.

1. Chemical constituents: Albizia bark contains serotonin, norepinephrine, 3′,4′,7-trihydroxyflavone, α-spinasterol glucoside, tannins, and others.
2. Pharmacological effects: The cold water extract of Albizia bark exhibits significant antifertility effects. In human pregnant uterine muscle strips, the extract significantly increases contraction tension and amplitude while markedly reducing contraction frequency. Its effect is similar to oxytocin but with a slower onset and longer duration. The decoction can inhibit peritoneal mast cell degranulation and significantly suppress both antigen sensitization and antibody production processes. Albizia bark polysaccharides inhibit mouse transplanted tumor S180 with an inhibition rate of 73%.
