[Overview] This herb is also known as Ginseng Seedling or Ginseng Leaf. It is the leaf of Panax ginseng C.A.Mey., a plant of the Araliaceae family. Harvested in autumn, it is dried in the shade or by low heat.

[Properties] Bitter and sweet in taste, cold in nature. Enters the Lung and Stomach meridians.

[Actions] Tonifies Qi, benefits the Lung, dispels summer heat, and generates fluids.

[Applications]
1. Used for cough. For Lung Qi deficiency with cough and shortness of breath, it can be combined with Astragalus (Huangqi), Atractylodes (Baizhu), Schisandra (Wuweizi), etc.; for dry cough due to Lung dryness, often combined with Anemarrhena (Zhimu), Fritillaria (Beimu), Mulberry leaf (Sangye), etc.
2. Used for summer heat thirst or yin-deficiency diabetes. For summer heat thirst, often used alone or combined with Ophiopogon (Maidong), Talc (Huashi), Watermelon rind (Xigua Cuiyi), etc.; for febrile disease with fluid injury, often combined with raw Gypsum (Sheng Shigao), Anemarrhena (Zhimu), polished rice (Jingmi), etc.; if Stomach yin is insufficient with dry mouth, can be combined with Reed rhizome (Lugen), Imperata root (Baomao Gen), Ophiopogon (Maimendong). Commonly used for diabetes: if heat exuberance injures yin, combine with Trichosanthes root (Tianhuafen), Asparagus (Tianmendong), Coptis (Huanglian); if both Qi and yin are injured, combine with raw Astragalus (Sheng Huangqi), Ophiopogon (Maidong), Schisandra (Wuweizi).
3. Used for Qi deficiency and physical weakness with failure of clear Yang to rise causing blurred vision and limb fatigue; can be combined with Astragalus (Huangqi), Codonopsis (Dangshen), Chinese yam (Shanyao).
4. Used for虚火 (deficiency fire) toothache; can be combined with Rehmannia (Sheng Di), Ophiopogon (Maidong), Achyranthes (Sheng Niuxi).

[Dosage and Administration] Internal use: decoction, 3–10 g. External use: appropriate amount, decocted and concentrated into a paste for topical application.

[Cautions] Use with caution in those with Spleen and Stomach cold deficiency. Not suitable for use with Veratrum (Lilu).

[Modern Research]
1. Chemical constituents: Ginseng stems and leaves contain ginsenosides, carotenoids, kaempferol, genistin, ginseng flavonoid glycosides, volatile oils, various amino acids, sugars, and multiple inorganic elements.
2. Pharmacological effects: Ginsenosides from ginseng stems and leaves have anti-aging, memory-enhancing, blood pressure-lowering, and cardioprotective effects; ethanol extracts of stems and leaves significantly reduce vitamin C content in rat adrenal glands; total saponins also exhibit antitumor effects, inhibiting mouse sarcoma S180 and mouse ascitic carcinoma; ginseng stems and leaves have anti-inflammatory and stress resistance enhancing effects.
3. Clinical reports: Coronary heart disease, hyperlipidemia, diabetes: Oral administration of ginseng stem and leaf saponin coated tablets (each tablet contains 20 mg ginsenosides), taken three times daily at 2 tablets per dose during the first week, then 3 tablets per dose for 10–12 weeks. In 80 cases of coronary heart disease, symptoms such as chest tightness, angina, poor appetite, poor sleep, and fatigue showed an average improvement rate of 66.1%. In 80 cases of hyperlipidemia, cholesterol decreased by 0.78 mmol/L in 50 cases (79.45%); β-lipoprotein decreased by 0.78 mmol/L in 66 cases (82.5%).
